The executive this week at Spruce Grove gun club approved IDPA shooting as a discipline for the club. The IDPA shooting will be done under the Wild Rose Action Shooters (WRAS) section. The Spruce Grove club has the IDPA matches and practice nights up on their website already.

WRAS will be joining IDPA and I will be organizing IDPA New Shooters course in the spring to introduce people to the sport.

I did a quick read through the rules and such on the WRAS website. This looks like a lot of fun.

Now, for the guys that have #### IPSC and IDPA, which is more fun?

Try both! They're different games, different rules, with different "flow".

I have been doing 3 gun and steel challenge for a few years. Was scheduled to do my BB course, but my divorce screwed that up that plan. I am comfortable with a holster and have done several matches now without getting severely chastised by a RSO, so if I can do IDPA without my BB, then that may bump me in that direction. :)

Next will come questions about my pistols, because I think my 3 gun pistol is out for IDPA unless I get into ESP class.

Each is a bit different :
* IDPA is more social and IPSC is more competitive.
* IDPA typically has a prescribed execution plan for each stage whereas IPSC is freestyle.
* IDPA has scenario based stages, IPSC doesn't (anymore :( )
* IDPA rules are more subjective (i.e. use of cover - if you don't believe me, ask Dave Sevigny)
* IPSC is more "gamey"

I used to shoot primarily IDPA and now shoot IPSC exclusively. I like the problem-solving aspect of IPSC and the competitive atmosphere, therefore, I think IPSC is more fun. However, there are folks who prefer IDPA and the health of that sport in the US demonstrates there is a market.

I encourage you to try both and make your own judgement. WRAS has some excellent shooters who are - in addition - great people. You will have a good time regardless of which discipline you choose.

You should be able to find some local "Level 1" IPSC matches that don't require the BB cert. Enough to decide if you want to commit to taking the BB course, anyways...

I firmly believe that you should just shoot whatever pistol you want, regardless of divisions. Particularly when you are just starting a new discipline. Worry about divisions after you've shot a few matches. Or don't worry about divisions at all: I personally find that concerning myself with making sure I've got a "winningest" platform in any shooting sport really takes away from how much I enjoy it. But then, I'm not in it to score high - I'm in it to do the best I can with the gear I have, and hopefully improve along the way. But that's not for everybody... :)

I have not shot a single match in any style but am taking my bb course next month, want to start with the basics of safety, but that's just me. Hope to shoot IDPA this year, and maybe get into 3 gun or ipsc too, try them all once before I make up my mind!

You may well already know, but the BB course is not just about safety. It's about how to do the game of IPSC safely. There is a fair bit of game-specific content that would bore someone not interested in the sport.
