I also cross posted this in action shooting because I need to have these bullets made before saturday morning.


what is your favorite idpa load?

I have been making my bullseye loads with vihtavuori n310 and would like to have stayed with it but..

I was just about to make a run of 1000 to shoot my classifier this weekend, so I thought I would try out my new chronograph. what a surprise I got!

a max load of vihtavuori n310 with a 230 grain round nose (bdx bullets) according to vihtavuori's own book is 4.2 grains and should be going 771 fps. Well I shot some through the crony and they are going 668 to 672, so a full 100 feet per second lower then what the book says and I am already at max published load and only make about 155 power factor.

why such a big difference?


and more importantly. what should I use to make pf? I have some 2400,some blue dot, and some win 296 on hand and will buy whatever is needed.

a friend of mine has about 40 pounds of enforcer in 8 pound jugs I could get quickly

I am using regular primers, should I go to magnum primers?

I shoot indoor a lot so clean burning is a major bonus. I find win 231 dirty/smokey but making power factor is the top priority and all suggestions are welcome.

HI; You need to state what caliber you are useing. Guessing a 45 acp? What gun barrell length is a big deal , if you use a colt commander 4.2 inch it will be 100 FPS slower than a 5 inch tube. Win 296 is a MAGNUM powder best left for 44 and 357 mags.
I was under the belive that 38 special 158 grain at about 850 feet per second was the standard for a power factor of 134. SO what do you really need?
 
It's a 5 inch colt 45 acp

38 special is for ssr that only requires 105 power factor


cdp (my class) power factor is 165

max load right now I only get just over 155 pf

N310 is too fast to get high velocities with 230gn bullets, you will reach pressure too soon.

If you want to get a higher velocity you need N330 or N340 to ensure you can get 800fps. Or use something with a similar burning rate to N340, examples would be Clays universal, longshot or HS6, have a look at the burning chart to pick some other powder in the same range that you can get access too.

Your testing was done with a 6 inch barrel so that is where some of your velocity went

of the 6 powders listed under 230g you picked the one with the lowest max velocity

231 / WST / WSF will all make PF with 230g in 45acp

as well as a lot of other powders from other companies

if you were shooting 200g I would pick WSF

n310 is what I use in my Walther gsp 32 long,I wanted to see if I could also use it for my 45 and stay with a common powder in all my loads but I guess its not to be.
