In appendix 1E of the IDPA rulebook (Ammunition Carriers), section D states that a "Magazine carrier must: D. Cover 2” of the magazine as measured from the top of the cartridge rim down the back flat of the magazine tube."

My question is this. Can the magazine carrier be open on the bottom but still cover two inches of the magazine? In other words, can it just cover the magazine on four sides?

I have not come across a holder like that nor would I understand why one would want one like that, would you not risk the magazine falling right down through to the base of itself thus making it very difficult to draw for a mag change?

I imagine it would be ok, but bob would have to clarify any ruling for it, there are leather mag holders that are semi open on the bottom with just a thin piece of leather in the middle.

can't see why kydex would be different.

There is nothing in the rule book to preclude a hole in the bottom of the magazine carrier. I am not sure what advantage such a design would provide over a mag carrier that is enclosed at the bottom.

If it were to be fully open than I would presume the mag, under some conditions, could fall through. I have never seen a mag carrier design made as you describe. If you have a picture of one feel free to email it to me at:

Here's a pic.

I was in the process of making this carrier out of leather and ended up cutting the bottom off because I screwed up. Just wanted to know if it would be still legal and weather I should finish it or not. The mags are held tightly and will stay if turned upside down.

Those appear to be fine. Just make sure when you insert them they cover the required 2". You might get called on it if they were inserted short. That is the advantage of having them sewn in at the bottom.

We have already established that. I think for him a suggestion, as has been pointed out above, on how best to close the bottom might be more helpful. The risk you run with the bottom open is pushing the mag in to far and having rounds strip off the mag when you pull the mag out.
