I just got dissed recently by a friend who put down IPSC as a game for people who want to play with guns. Specifically he used a racial slur to imply it attracts a certain ethnicity to those events.

I mean give me a break, as opposed to what? IDPA for rednecks pretending to kill zombies or fight back commies?

I get IPSC is not mil sim, but who cares? It's just a sport for me.

Anyway, I was kinda pissed as now I don't ever want to talk to him about our hobby. I don't get why some people feel the need to put down others, what the hell do they get out of it? Maybe he thought I would break down and worship him for being such a tactical god or something. :mad:

I have met good people in both sports. I suppose there are not so good in both as well.
I have met people I used to shoot with years ago and they remembered me from 10 + years ago. Shoot the sport you enjoy, don't let one person take the fun away from your sport.
Most of all have fun. That is why we do it, to have fun.

Every community has people that know more than you and talk more than you. Doesn't matter if you're into golf, horses, cars or guns.

As soon as the person started using racial slurs, you should automatically realize that he's either ignorant and/or an idiot. Actually, in modern society you have to work very hard to be that ignorant, to the point of idiocy. At my black badge course we had a couple of IDPA guys, got along great with them, they come out shooting with us frequently and I'll be going in on their IDPA events as well. No friction whatsoever. You need to go shopping for new friends :cool:

There are many different shooting sports , your friend may not enjoy IPSC , so to each their own , but no one is forcing him to take part......I enjoy IPSC myself....the Black Badge fraterinty .

IPSC = Irrational People Squabbling Constantly

IDPA = I Don't Practice Anymore

PPC = Pillows, Pads & Cushions

Cowboy Shooting = No Target Too Big / No Target Too Close

They're all games, have fun. :)

Okay, but what does he get out of putting others down? What did he gain?

He's not necessarily putting others down, he may just be trivializing their accomplishments by rationalizing his own failures or inadequacies.

"Rationalization

Rationalization is often called the “sour grapes defense.” This comes from one of Aesop’s fables. The fox wanted some grapes, but could not reach them. This caused him to feel pain, as he could not have what he wanted. He rationalized, “They were probably sour anyway” to turn them into something he didn’t really want, and thus couldn’t really be upset about not getting. It is an intellectual way to diminish pain or guilt." (http://www.psychpage.com/learning/defenses.html)
