Looking at getting back in ation shooting again, I looked at IDPA, but this does not seem very viable with the restrictions. The standard box where a gun must fit into, I cannot put my stock Berretta 92FS, or my 1911 (modified only with a beavertail and magwell) into. These are common carry guns, is this correct?

I used my 1911 commander, it easily fits the box. But you need a stock magwell. Pretty sure a 5" barrelled 1911 would fit as well.

Rule 8.2.1.1.6 The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 8 ¾” x 6” x 1 5/8” (222.3 mm x 152.4 mm x 41.3 mm.)

A stock Beretta 92FS measures 217 x 137 x 38 mm, so it will fit easily.

Yes, a government model 1911 (with 5 inch barrel) will fit.

Generally speaking, unless your gun has some major external modifications, it will fit the CDP/ESP/SSP box. (Noting, however, that there are rules covering which modifications - external and internal - are acceptable.)

The only downside to your 1911 would be the size of your magwell. I have seen some that would not allow the gun to fit into the IDPA box. The Beretta will fit with ease as others have said. What made you think it would not?

Actually, I forgot to mention that my Beretta has Bo-mar adjustable sights. I rechecked it and it will barely fit with the height. I may have to fie the lanyard ring down some.

Next question, I now live in Saskatchewan. Are there any IDPA matches here, ever? Looking at the sight, I noticed that they have two clubs hosting IDPA, and I belong to one of them. However, I do not ever see it being on the calendar or even in meets. I am wondering if it is even active in Saskatchewan.

Thanks

Most clubs will let you come out and play with whatever gear you have; if you want to get into matches you'll be asked to use approved equipment. At our club all are welcome with whatever gear they want to practice with (as long as it is safe). But for matches, qualifiers, etc the gear has to be compliant.

If your Beretta barely fits...it fits. Outside of a Sanctioned Match I have yet to see anyone worry to much about whether or not a gun fits in the box or not. Virtually all common production guns do. including yours. FYI you can compress your Bomar if it just hangs up on the edge of the box, quite legal to do so when testing the fit.

Take Care

Yup.
