Idpa target dimensions

We have three full size 1/2" ones at our club and they are HEAVY! Lugging them out to 100yds to hang is an effort but on the upside, they will last for Every!

Sorry John in bc, i didnt realize this thread was still going. Why 66%? Like mentioned the full size would be extremely heavy to ship. A 66% size target can offer a similar challenge at shorter distance.

You know your business better than I but could you not make them out of 3/8" steel. I have seen photos of the FS targets made with thinner steel. It maybe a better grade of steel but would be a lot lighter. They should stand up if the club limits their use to handgun cartridges used in IDPA/IPSC ex Open guns.

Hey Canuck, if people were to only use pistol cartridges one would only need regular mild steel. The benefit of 1/2" ar 500 is that even if someone put the targets out for high powered rifles by mistake it will have almost no effect with even the largest rifles. Yes I agree a 3/8th plate would be lighter and we have made 3/8th plate in the past it just doesn't seem as popular and the 1/2" is far more durable. The steel is the same quality between ar500 at 3/8" as it is in 1/2", it's the same hardness. The 1/2" just offers more reinforcement. If I were to make one target for everyone it would be i. 1/2" if I get a large number of people asking for 3/8th again we may bring it back.

Thanks for your interest.

We should have pics up today or tomorrow, hopefully at the latest. Our water jet contractor is having some slight issues with meeting deadlines haha. We were supposed to have our steel Thursday. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

Matt as a matter of interest how much more would it cost to go a step up on the hardess of the steel? I have no idea how it is described but I think you know what I mean. I am thinking on the lines of 3/8" steel using a harder steel for lightness,

Our ar500 is actually ar514, we posted our spec/data sheet here.
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1201693-AR500-spec-data-sheet
Yes it is possible to get ar550 but depending on circumstances such as volume of fire/hardness/speed/weight of projectile the additional hardness of the plate can actually cause it to shatter as aposed to bend or deform. There is a balance between so hard that it shatters and too soft that it bends. 1/4" Ar500 is used in multi hit rifle protective body armour, which people trust their lives with. Never has one of our plates been penetrated by a legal or conventional rifle rounds even when exposed to .50 bmg.

Would it be possible to order a FS 1/4" steel version of the target?

Thanks for the info on the steel. I suspected there might be a reason for why you are going the way you are.

FVT thank you for the info and the PM!

I appreciate you taking the time to follow up on my questions.

To the others who offered your opinions.....thanks for your input but I was interested in the OP's reasoning, not your reasoning of what his reasoning might be............ Lol

Yes of course we do custom work and we stock 1/4" ar500 but we recomend it for use with pistols only. When exposing 1/4" ar500 to rifles the point of impact isn't the issue, it's the area around it that can bend. The surface stays smooth but the plate can begin to warp when exposed to large volumes of rifle fire. We test all of our products to the point of failure. IE shooting our pistol targets with 5.56, 7.62x39 and 12 guage 3" copper jacketed sabot slugs and 3" 1 1/4" oz slugs and at unsafe distances. The 5.56 will penetrate 1/4" ar500 at 15 meters and the 3" 12 gauges slugs will bend it at that distance. How ever at 20 meters 1/4" ar500 will stop a 5.56mm which is actually incredible considering a 5.56 will penetrate 3/8" mild steel at the same distance. How ever if you were to go with any of our target models I personally feel that the 1/2" is the best bang for your buck. It's the last target you will ever need and you will go bankrupt trying to break it. How ever everything less then 1/2" will show the effects of high powered rifles at close range, doesn't mean it's not incredible steel you just need to tailor the thickness to your specific needs. Can I ask what calibers you intend on using and at what distance?

9MM, 38spl, 40ca; & 45acp. I would not expect much in the way of 40cal and I have a character who may play with his .357mag at around 160PF.

No rifle.
