There will be an IDPA type match in Camrose April 1. Match fee is $20 for Camrose Shooting Sports Association members and $30 for non members. Pre payment or prior arrangement will be required to reserve a spot.

Lunch will be provided and the safety briefing will be at 9:45. Message me to sign up or if you have any questions.

It means they only use the rules they like....

That's a pretty accurate statement. We use all the IDPA safety and shooting rules (fault/cover lines, no dropped ammo, etc.)

However if someone is uncomfortable performing an action or using a holster we allow them to start at low ready. If a shooter's gear is not completely IDPA legal (say their belt doesn't go through their belt loops) that is allowed.

The end goal is we don't want people to be excluded for not having the right equipment, we don't want new shooters to feel uncomfortable, but we do want people who want to compete be competitive.

Also some of our stages do not meet all the IDPA rules. For example "anything you can see you can shoot." Due to the set up of the indoor range and the limited amount of wall sections we have there are stages where someone might be able to see around a wall and take shot but it is not allowed as it is not the intent of the stage.

Also last time we had a sort of card game that was not a defensive based match but it was fun but would not be allowed at a sanctioned match.

The idea is just to be safe and have fun without preventing anyone from participating.

Sounds like a good intro to the sport.

Is your club affiliated?

No we are not. We were asked if it was something we were interested in but at the moment we are not able to meet all the requirements such as being able to run a classifier.

I'm sure people make fun as we don't use every single IDPA rule but if a shooter went to a sanctioned match the rules they would have follow while actually shootobg would be the same.

So far the rules you change aren't changes at all, just a little common sense in a world with little of it. Not shooting targets you can see is often done at local matches to reduce construction of props that may or may not be at hand. Starting folks from the low ready position is quite acceptable to allow new shooters into the sport. Anyone who laughs at that is either to stupid to worry about or to young to know better. IDPA clubs have and always will do their best to accommodate new shooters within the confines of safety.

Good luck with your program and good luck in moving forward with your affiliation.

Agreed. The rules are not intended to be iron rails that prevent you from enjoying the sport.

Thanks for the support guys.

I hope my explanation clarifies why we host "IDPA type" matches instead of straight IDPA matches.

Also everything is clearly explained to all shooters before hand. We don't want anyone blindsided by an in house rule or anything like that.

It's a balance and we are open to feedback. For everyone who wants trickier stages someone wants easier stages. For every person who thinks we should follow the rules more strictly there is another person (or three) who thinks they should be more relaxed.

I have had the good fortune of being involved in starting up, and for the past few years heading up an IDPA affiliated club here in Newfoundland where ALL of the members' primary interest is having a good time. At our most recent match, a gorgeous sunny day (almost spring like, though spring doesn't really arrive here in earnest until late June, lol), a lunch of moose soup and apple pie helped to achieve that goal.

I just gotta get out to one of your shoots.
