IDPA - what do I need to know?

Dropping in next week to the IDPA shoot. Spoke very briefly with the officer that runs it, and he was extremely vague on what I need to know/do/bring

Can you guys help? I tried searching, and found nothing for IDPA newbies.

Got a G17 with 5 mags, mag pouch and holster, so I guess that'll be my piece.

Are they an inviting bunch? Should I familiarize myself more with it before I go? If so, where's a good spot for info?

Looking forward to it, but I don't want to show up not knowing what to expect.
 
Be careful...you can experience severe withdrawl if you don't go at least once a week after your first match! IPSC requires more mags than IDPA, your 5 mags are more than enough for IDPA. A vest or jacket concealing your holster is a good idea. All the IDPA guys I have met are all about fun and safety. Never met a snob yet. Have Fun!

I never use more than 5 mags in IPSC
Mind you,if you use a 1911 single stack and 7 or 8 round mags you might want more

IDPA or IPSC just go do it and enjoy your self

4 on the belt, 1 on the gun, 1 just in case in the pants "Mag" pouch.

I did a reload once that dragged all 3 remaining mags with the one I grabbed.
It was a field course. With the one in my pants, I finished on the last round and didn't have to run back and pick up mags off the ground.
 
For IDPA it is two on the belt and one in the gun maximum. Just wanted to make that clear for our new shooter. Having more mags reduces the amount of time you spend reloading mgas which is always nice.

glad to see this thread, we have IDPA shoots regurlaly at my club and have been interested, (been out and seen the shoots and course, but haven't tried it yet), currently alls i shoot (competitily wise is bull-eye), for IDPA i was thinking of shooting my Norinco NP-40 (CZ clone), which i have 4 mags for and a holster, is there anything else i need/recommend ?
 
If your local club is anything like the ATHL here in Alberta, you will be welcomed with open arms. I showed up in Aug, a total newbie to IDPA. The club, to a man, were so open to all my questions, it was amazing.

mag pouch and a cover garment, also make sure you have a concealment holster, not one that is drop/offset as only females can use those in idpa.
 
Double mag holder and a cover garment (must cover the bottom of your holster) such as an old short or coat will do. You are allowed two mags on the belt and one for your gun for a total of three. The 4th mag can be your Barney mag.

Go out, meet the guys , ask questions and have fun.

This is an perfect example of how all IDPA clubs should welcome new shooters. At my club anyone who wants to come is welcome and if you are already holster qualified, you are more then welcome to participate in our weekly matches, if not, I will arrange fro you to get holster qualified. Anyone in my area that is interested in watching and or shooting IDPA, please send me a PM, I will give you directions to our club and any information you need.

I wish you wouldn't do this as the less people that come the more stages I can do in one night! ;) It's kind of like letting everyone know your secret fishing spot. :D
