Update 2007-11-06:

Well, my shotgun came back on Friday... just been so busy, unable to take some good pics of the fantastic Parkerizing job that was done by Tactical Ordinance.

I basically decided that since the shotgun was so cool... it deserved a real finishing (not spray paint).

I also got the stainless follower as a little gift ;)

I will post more pics later in the week.

Original Post:

Well, it's been a long several weeks. I am writing this and posting pics to wrap up the completion of my 8.5" 870.

Ever since I saw Dlask making the 8.5" shotguns I knew I would have one. I decided to do things the hard way though...

First I ordered a HP9-1 from Marstar for only the receiver; the Chinese made receivers are absolutely fantastic (see the last pic - it's Remington Wingmaster/Police quality). Unfortunately the barrel and trigger group on the Norinco were not. The trigger was actually garbage, literally; it had a sear that wasn't working and sometimes would not fire when the trigger was pulled. Ouch! Again, luckily I bought this shotgun only for the receiver.

A Knoxx Stock was then ordered from TSE at rougly the same time to tame this little beast.

Once the shotgun arrived (2 weeks later) I dropped it off at DLASK to get the barrel and work required to accommodate the barrel.

I then ordered a Wingmaster (alloy) trigger group and Flexi-Tab upgrade kit from Tactical Ordinance. I also decided that I might as well not risk the feeding on my soon to be shotgun and also ordered a set of latches to replace the Chinese ones.

I got the shotgun back, minus forend furniture as I had told Jo (Dlask) that I would fit my own forend... what a mistake that was. I managed to fit a forend, but was ashamed to show anyone.

I called Jo a few days later and had a chuckle about how difficult it is to make forends for these little babies. Well, Jo invited me down to see what he had in his shop... I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had one beautiful aluminum-picatinny rail'd forend for the 8.5" 870. This was it!!! It was all coming together!!!

But as with everything in life, things are not always that easy... the Norinco tube was metric and too large for the forend. I made a quick stop to Reliable Gun in Vancouver this morning and picked up a new forend and nut then raced to Dlask to see if he could shorten this one. Well, Jo being the man that he is simply swapped an already modified forend for my newly bought replacement forend (wait time 30seconds). I still can't believe the service, thank you so much!

Anyway... I put it together... made some minor fitting adjustments then painted it Lordco Engine Enamel Black - it's a little too glossy for my liking, but whatever... I'm just glad it is done.

ENjoY!!!

Looks good G!

How much was the Flexi-Tab upgrade kit from Tactical Ordinance and was it easy to install?

What exactly is included in the kit?

So it's settled then...no more pens in the trigger guards. The new code is WHITE SOCKS. You will of course be ridiculed if you wear BLACK socks. That's the secret photo code for...wait, I've said too much

very nice,

would love to have one like it myself!

The paint looks good in the pics. However, if you wanted to change it in the future you may want to consider VHT GM satin black or if you have the ability to spray try PPG DP90 flat black epoxy primer, that stuff is crazy hard!

thanks for the pics!

Many questions.

How does the fore-end feel on the hands when you cycle it? Can you still feel the metal, especially in between the "ladders"? Does Dlask make a regular sized 870 fore-end, or just this shorter one? Could you swap out the collapsing stock for a pistol grip? I recall people saying the SMD 12 could have either the pistol grip or a fixed stock, but not a collapsing/folding one.

I think it looks really sharp. Nice to put something together and get it exactly the way you want it. What are you thinking for sights? Bit of pic rail on the receiver top with a Dr Optic or something similar?

The magazine cap is a really nice touch.

Thanks all... I knew I was going to catch some heat for the socks - oh well.

jsullivan: The forend feels great, I can't feel the metal. I don't know if Dlask makes a regular sized 870 fore-end; you could try calling them. The whole legal thing with the shotguns and pistol grips I believe is that you can have a pistol grip and 8.5" barrel if it comes from Dlask like that. You can't have a folder because then it will fall under 26". My stock fully collapsed is 27" by the way. :)

Thanks for the kind words, I wanted something specific and set out to build it :) I am happy with the sights as they are... I wanted the Norinco receiver for the nice finish and being able to use the front blade with some accuracy (the Remington Express has a round top which really sucks IMO - If I had an Express I'd put a rail on top for sure.)

Looks great G37, you definitely took the long way around but I like the final product, especially the finer lines of the receiver. I think this must be the 'American cousin' to yours.

I like this style forend as well, the round rail guards on the side to make it really fat and easy to hold onto. I don't mind the plastic trigger guard on the Express but I don't like the rounded receiver top on the Express, I will have the received milled to create grooves or just add open sights. In hindsite I would have one built on a Wingmaster or Police receiver.
jsullivan : If Dlask doesn't have the full length forends, I believe Wolverine carries/carried a similar one made by ERGO (was in their Featured Items page in July)

Cheers

Sorry, missed your post...

Yeah, it just includes the Breech Bolt and part it sits on. I believe it was $90~$100'ish.
If you have a Norinco though you will need the new carrier though (I got a whole new trigger group (metal) for $90 - used)

I like knowing that my "Norinco" is mostly comprized of quality US and Canadian made parts :D - It's very smooth and solid feeling.
