If .308 can shoot 130 grains, why do we need 243?

Who says we don't need beer?
I can live without toilet paper.
Can warsh me mitts with beer.
Can the same be said with t.p.?

Sum awff yewse need to git yer pry-oar-itittis in order..........yikes...........f:P:2:

if 308 is so good why is there 260 rem ?

Marketing, mostly. Especially when you consider the .270 Winchester predates it by three quarters of a century and yet outperforms it in every ballistic measure. Doesn't mean it's a bad cartridge, just not by any means necessary.

The funnest guns are the ones that make the least "sense..."

Ain't that the truth.

I'm with Ardent, I hate beer. And #### tickets might be nice, but not necessary, just don't use poison oak or poison ivy leaves!!

.243 is my one and only center fire as of currently.
Can take whitetail in the areas I can even legally use it.
And its one of the most readily available rounds under the size cap on varmint in my area also.

Therefore...1 caliber, multiple uses, happy wallet for a beginner.

Actually the quest is to own one of every caliber in every model and make of rifle ever produced!

First one to complete the list gets to meet sunray in person!!

The idea that 308 can do most everthing is probably fairly accurate. But for me I collect guns not based on what caliber they are, but for the historical significants of the actual gun. Caliber is almost irrelevant. My american Krags happen to be 30-40. My Enfields are 303. The MAS is 7.5 x 54 etc etc. All close to being an equivalent to 308win, but I wouldn't rechamber just to reduce the number of calibers I load for.
I guess that brings up the obvious question why anybody wants countless numbers of guns that essentially do the same thing. But I don't have time to ponder that, I need to get some 8 x 50r, 8mm Lebel, and 8 x 57 reloaded today.

I figure that a lot of gun-folk that can afford it can go through a pile of arms. When the passion for firearms & shooting sets in on one, it can sure lead to a heap of fun & adventures. Lots of folks collect stuff & gun folk ain't any different, just their stashes are cooler than say, stamp collections & furniture hordes.

My Enfields are in .32-40 & .45 ACP and my Mosin Nagant 91/30 in 7.62x54 is fun to load for as well as my Husqvarna 9.3x57. The hobby takes one in numerous directions.:)

A .243 with 85gr Partition at 3100 fps will have much less recoil, shoot flat and have enough jam for deer hunting. A .243 with a fast twist barrel shooting 105, 107 or 115gr bullets will shoot much, much flatter and have much less wind drift and more energy at long ranges than a .308.

I tried one gun for deer to gopher once, a 243 BLR. Ended up resighting the thing constantly. Ended up 22LR for everything from plinking to coyote, 243 with Partitions for Deer, quickly sold the BLR.
