IF a new Grizzly hunt, what gun

Humbly suggest that there are definitely situations under which you would consider shooting a bear at around 100 yards, you just haven't had them happen, and hopefully never will. Fairly sure you could think of few if you tried. If you had cubs appear behind you, and then your dog coming straight at you at a very high rate of speed? Which means a sow is following, also at a high rate of speed?
This stuff isn't hard. The distance means nothing. It is all situationally dependent. To draw lines and make statements doesn't really mean anything, does it?

I had that exact scenario happen to me! Best thing to do is move out of the way!! Ho and I didn’t have to shoot that bear!

soooo says the Guy with experience ... no clue do you ? just smart keyboard

As normal you show your ignorance on all matters. I have been bluff charged enough times to know and respect them, weirdly most of the times was when I was using archery gear… or with clients and we spooked them on a fishing hole.. I have also killed a fair few bears, unfortunately no grizzly with my bow.

Enjoy.

There used to be courses one could take that would teach you how to load and shoot under duress and get quick shots off at close distance in the case of a bear charge.
I'd be willing to wager that alot fewer bears would be killed out of fear, and fewer hunters would be mauled or killed under a real attack.

The only time I was charged (black bear) it surprised us from about 12-15y away. Didn't have time to reach my bear spray that was on my hip before it reached me, because I hadn't practiced drawing it. Sure as hell made sure to change that afterward. Luckily there was an afterward.

I call BS ... and you should tone down , back OFF ..maybe go for a coffee , stop the rum

Exactly why there are less of them. Fear. As you stated you would start shooting at 100 yards, which is a far cry from self defense.

There isn’t a shortage here. Sorry to burst your bubble.
If a bear is charging me within a hundred yards I’m not waiting until someone starts giving me ranges, advice on bluff charges or until it breaks 30 yards before I start shooting. If it’s minding its own business at any distance, so will I.

This fellow apparently couldn't or didn't move. Remember something about the dog being more harm than good, somehow as well. He got hit fairly hard, and mauled pretty good. Had his rifle in his hands, and could not get a shot off. He wasn't killed, and the pack he had on saved him from a lot of a damage. This was in the Valemount area, quite some time ago.

Not bursting my bubble at all, do you. At a 100 yards a bear isn’t a threat to me, it can become one, but that is established by distance. I do like your change in distance from 100 yards to 30. Stuff changes in those parameters.

PLEASE go to bed ... silly guy

We need these, look how engaged we all are. Slimbo, appreciated the commentary.

Many here take offence to him for whatever reason, but that happens when you speak what you’ve seen and it doesn’t fit the traditional narrative. Phil Shoemaker has shot one Brown / Grizz defensively that wasn’t wounded by one of his hunters prior…in around a half century afield in various areas of Alaska. The fellow has been on brown and grizz hunts that need three figures to illustrate and has “lived the life” more than any of us. If he shot every bear that bluffed him close range over the decades he’d be struggling to find bears to hunt.

Many of those who’ve done the most in hunting be they John in the Zambezi or Phil in Alaska, have the least interest in getting a good stopped a charge story. It’s bad for business, even if it’s likely alright for the marketing.

Hoping that a bear charge is going to end in a bluff is a good way to get killed. The bear won’t be missed. You might be. Regardless of the odds.

It’s rather clear when you’ve seen a few what’s a bluff, and I don’t take it for granted that I can speak bear the .375 is ready. But shooting outside 25 yards is ill advised in my judgement and risks as much inciting a real attack from a bluff as it does saving your hide. I hesitate to say what I really feel is the range cutoff as folks will accuse you of being reckless, but when you go do it, it makes sense. I couldn’t have done all the paperwork shooting every bluff would have incited, and likely would have made a couple real emergencies out of plain old grizzly communication.

I hear you on take the safe road and live to tell the tale, often that’s not shooting at a grizzly that’s moving your way though. That’s Phil’s rationale too. If you want to turn things south, wound an agitated grizz in a corner.

As always this^^

My point too!!

A bear at 100 yards can’t touch you. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get ready, but anyone with bear experience should understand 100 yards is too far to start shooting “in defense”

Hell, at 100 yards the only trigger you need your finger on is the one on your camera. Trying to defend a 100 yard DLP shoot is the absolute height of bearanoia. And it's stupid.

If you aren't confident in hitting a charging bear effectively at 30 yards, how are you going to make a good hit on the same "charging" bear out near 100 yards? I admire your commitment to this line of reasoning, but it's got some big holes in it.
