If I was to buy a RCM for a good price, including vx2 2-7 , 34 rounds and a leather sling, Ruger hawkeye synthetic $1k...

it is a .338 model......... So in future if I decide I don't want this RCM chambering, what can I do to it to bring it back into a 'standard' available chambering? with a Rebarrel? is the Bolt face workable for a plain jane 308? or is it limited to what can be re chambered into?

just wanting to ask a few Question before I dive into the 338 RCM........

- I understand the obsolete-ness of the RCM..

Will still have My Whelen, it will be easier to reload ammo for due to the 06 brass.... so its not a drama.

No experience with the RCM, in fact I had to google it to figure out what you were talking about. As far as rebarreling, you would need a new bolt to go smaller. The extractor won't grip the cartridge rim properly if the rim is smaller than the bolt face. You can always open it up to a larger diameter though. I had a .338 WM with a brake once; couldn't get rid of it fast enough and would never buy another.

yeah they came, they did an they sort of went by the way side.....
a handful of my sambar mates use them but that's about all I know personally... a few pop up from time to time for sale..

I think its more sensible not to worry about it an keep totin the Whelen.... but I kind of want to join their gang on a long term scale, so gather cheap rifle combo now, slowly gather brass and items... use not so often and enjoy a shorter action thumper to poke between the gum trees :)

To rebarrel you would have to stick with a magnum caliber or possibly source a different bolt.

If you can locate 100-200 brass grab it as that would last many years , you could rebarrel or rebore to 350 rem at a later date if you even wanted to

I had a 338 RCM for a brief period and I actually liked the cartridge and the rifle except for one major problem, it was too damn short! If I was a stocky 5'6", it would have fit me very well but I'm a lanky 6'1" and it wasn't even close. The rifle was light and handy but recoil was noticeable. As far as the brake goes, you will either like it or you won't. If you don't like it, you can remove it. The cartridge duplicates the 338-06 which is not a bad thing.

I bought a stainless 338 rcm with the 20" barrel and open sights. I was mainly drawn to it for the rifle not the cartridge, but have since realized it is one of the best all 'rounders lobbing a 225 grainer @ 2700fps. Definitely should be more popular than it was and is a nicer design than the wsm's with their rebated rims. I aquire brass once in a while and am up to about 400 pcs including factory loaded stuff (hot). Will hopefully be hunting moose, elk, grizz etc. with her this year!! Long live the 338 RCM!!.........please.......

I have a 300 rcm...scored rifle, dies and 100 brass for about 650$ if IIRC. Picked up 200 more brass on clearance at 25$/box, then found 560 rounds of loaded 165 gr hornady superformance for 10$/box shipped. my go to deer gun now lol

338 RCM- Awesome cartridge but practically a 338-06 in a short action. 300RCM- Why did they bother, as there is the WSM and the RSAUm. If you like the rifle and have brass, then you could do worse than a 338 RCM!!

Another 338RCM here - Guide Gun. Went the other route with loads - 185gr TTSXs at just over 2900fps. Also slipped it into a McMillan stock with a CDI DBM for mag feeding. After a bit of mods to the Ruger Scout mag (the 10rd 308 mag hold 7rds of RCM) and trading out the ejector for one from the scout, I have a quasi-scout with a bit more hit. Feels like elk and moose meds to me. Also makes me feel better in brown bear country.

Don't think I've seen a RCM without irons, but not all came threaded for the brake. Personally don't see the need. But everyone else's mileage may vary.

Islander I think many have went for the Gun itself not the Cartridge back then, Ruger wised up to it a bit now I see with various similar models in different chamberings.

Truth is this thing Wont Sell Quick- so ive expressed a lot of interest with the guy and switched back a few emails , so if it sits for a bit longer, I'll have made up my mind a little more about it...

IF - I didn't have the Ruger 35W then it would be a No Brainer.. LOL id be all over it..

I also think the Whelen is too easy to feed to Get Rid of..
