Well this a.m. at around 0905 I watched helplessly as a very nice 8pt. whitetail walked just 10 yards out of 'my' bow range :( ,He had NO idea I was in his 'world' :) He just walked and then headed off to beddy bye.
Although,if I had my rifle I coulda taken 'em,but man oh man was it just as nice to watch this animal going about his own buiseness,I'll probably never see him again and hopefully my next venture out,I'll get a shot at that nice muley buck I saw back in August. Not to say I will but with the amount of deer I've seen in my area I'm bound to get sumth'n for the freezer

A cross bow might have helped eh?

A crossbow falls under the same rules as bows right?

I'm not all that familliar w/ a crossbow, but would'nt the tragectory be the same or less? Which to me would'nt have allowed a shot either because of the range the deer was at? And the rules only apply to the handicapped do they not :?:
I'm gonna go back thier this weekend and set up a ladder stand and sit all day :)

Crossbows range in power and speed just like compounds.... ranges are similar... but crossbows generally have a slight edge in speed and trajectory.

And the rules only apply to the handicapped do they not
Most all jurisdictions allow crossbows as archery equipment... even the most conservative States now realize there is no practical difference in a Crossbow to a Compound Bow and now allow thier use by anyone

Unfortunately, not in Alberta. The crossbow does have an advantage in speed compared to a compound bow (although that is changing fast!) but the arrow (bolt) drops alot faster then an arrow from a compound bow. Effective range with a crossbow is the same as a compound bow. 40 yards is a long shot.

It's nice to see you still smiling Huntsman. The meat is an added bonus, but it's the sitting in the outdoors where it's peaceful and quiet that matters the most.

Some incredible long shots have been made with compounds, by experienced and damned lucky hunters.
I once shot my compound at a piece of 3/4 plywood at 60 yards. It went through and burried half it's length into the sand bank behind. (Target point)

I'll stay with the old standard, and keep my shots to thirty maybe fourty yards. (Hitting that piece of plywood at 60 was an embarrassing proceedure)

I can confidently hit a target @ 50yds,a deer is another thing.I missed two shots last year at an average size 3x4 whitetail,1st shot went over,2nd went under  ,A bit of 'buck fever' does'nt help either  But I have to agree with you John Y Canuck in keeping my ranges limited to 30-40yds.
And 'scar',yes the meat is always nice, but getting away from the busy everyday world beats anything
I just bought a ladder stand tonite too,so it'll be pit in position this week :!:
