if i swap bolts between m96 mausers do i need to check headspace? or should it be relatively consistent... if i buy a barrelled action without a bolt and use an extra bolt i have laying around, should everything be ok?

Doesn,t matter the high quality of the swedish Mauser or any rifles, if you swap bolt, headspace check with the proper gages is mandatory, in my opinion. beter be safe than sorry:)

You may have to do some fitting with the bolt so that it operates properly, I wouldn't view it as a drop in and shoot scenario.

If you have two rifles with correct bolts and want to swap one of them (say, because it has a bent handle) there is a way to test without guages.

Assuming you have a case fired in each rifle, swap both bolts and see if you can chamber a fired case in each rifle. You will have to feed the empty from the mag, to get the extractor onto the rim.

If one bolt has excess, the other will be too tight, and won't claose on the empty. If they both chamber, both bolts are ok.

I would expect both to be just fine.

member winchester070 sells gauges and such. O got a set of 8mm headspace guages off of him, Very resaonable and good to deal with.

Not sure about Swedes, but alot of guys dont bother on German k98s, but better safe then sorry, unless you try it and fire it with a string. haha

There are can be differences with the Swedish bolts. Some can be difficult to close if switched to a different rifle. Had one with a cracked bolt handle from being too hard to close. Found a replacement bolt that was just right with no slop.

Let the amusers have their fun, you'll be alright.

Maybe yes, maybe no:yingyang:. Don't assume anything until you actually check with a gauge. A Clymer no-go gauge for the 6.5x55 sells for $25.99 from Brownells. Use it once to resolve your concern, then sell it on the EE. Lots of Swede Mauser shooters out there to snap it up.

I've owned a good selection of MILSURP caliber headspace gauges for many yrs and always consider them essential, even if a person isn't into re-barrelling as I am. Not too long ago I got a nice M1903 Springfield with a very new looking bolt. Turned out that the headspace was several thou in excess of the "field" or unsafe to fire gauge.

Even matching numbered bolts can wear to a point where headspace becomes an issue. Then consider the matching bolt with a readily swapped head, ala Lee-Enfield. With MILSURPS you are playing with pieces that left military technical control 50-70 yrs ago. When dealing with a 50,000 PSI pressure bloom a few inches in front of your face a cheap headspace gauge suddenly becomes a very good bargoon.

Again, this is the Internet with 180 degree views on a wide variety of topics, so it's your pick.:)
