Okay, so let me commence by saying I have forever been biased against the AR by my experience with the C7, unfortunately with the thermold mags and crappy blanks of the late 1980s.

I realize intellectually that those issues are not the rifle's fault, but at an unconscious level, I still mistrust the system.

BUT, for a variety of logistical and financial reasons, I may consider getting one in the future. I do not wish to have mine kitted out like a swiss army knife, and would most likely be considering a 20" barrel... possibly a 16".

If I were to be looking for a solid one, with flat top for one electro-optical doodad, what would be the recommended brands? This would be a lifetime purchase - At least, that's the plan.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You will get every brand named here. They are all good, and theoretically, all the same. Some look cooler. Some cost more.

I think everyone can agree that colt would be the best choice, but in reality, if its tuned right, it doesnt matter what it is

I like my Rock River Arms that I picked up from Questar. They have some really good choices like LMT and Spike's Tactical. Or you could go Canadian and get an AR from Dlask Arms or Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply (ATRS).

what would you recommend for a custom built AR? I too am interested in the AR line, but i always get so confused what with all the uppers, and lowers and barrel this and that, etc etc. i never know what to get, or what brand names to trust for reliability and accuracy.

Colt Colt Colt. If it ain't a Colt... it's a copy.

Plus Sam Colt made men equal and all.

:)

i'm gonna get a remington r-15. out of teh box put an optic of some sort and done. no barbie-ing it up for me. I want a gun that goes bang, not some metal hulk full of plastic bits that cost a fortune so i don't have any money left to shoot it!

can't go wrong with a Stag.

Have to disagree with that. I saw a Stag the other day that had the front sight base visibly canted off to one side. This was on a brand new rifle. We sent the owner back to the store where he bought it and they went through their entire inventory only to find that every single one of their Stag rifles had the same canted front sight base.

That customer decided he wasn't happy with a brand new rifle that had such an obvious defect so he came and let us build him a custom rifle. We spent a whole bunch of time going through options and choices and in the end the rifle turned out beautifully. You should have seen the smile on his face when he saw it all completed.

BTW this is it and to be honest it looks even better in person.

To anyone who doubts the quality of a custom built rifle. This thing is dripping in Colt, Magpul, Daniel Defence, and YHM parts. It is all the best of the best.

Do you guys happen to have a build sheet with options/prices?

No. There are thousands upon thousands of different possible variations of the AR15. We try to stock as many parts as we can but even that is still limited. Have a look through the AR15 page on our website to get an idea of the kind of stuff we have built in the past.

Call or email and we can discuss what you want. We can build nearly anything and are always up for a challenge.

PS: We just got some VERY COOL carbon fibre PRI forends in. I am gonna assemble a rifle length upper on one tomorrow ....... just cause I can. :)
