What I know:

1. to remove the lever from a Marlin 1895, you unscrew the pivot screw
2. when the lever is removed, the bolt can slide backward

What I don't know:
if the lever accidentally falls out because the screw loosens and falls out, will the bolt hit me in the face if I press the trigger?

If it's working properly, you can't fire a Marlin lever-action unless the lever is completely closed.
Look on the bottom tang behind the trigger guard.............see the little piece of metal sticking out? Unless it's depressed by the lever, the trigger won't fire the rifle.

Unless you hold your rifle different then I do, the lever would only fall out on the downward, opening stroke, thus preventing a round from chambering. The upward stroke locks the bolt and generally your hand is in or around the lever, and it is engaged in the mechanism, preventing it from falling. At least that's what I recall from the last time I cleaned mine.

This has the potential for a "shoot into space", "M14 in the dishwasher" or "shower with my rifle" kind of thread.

No, there is no chance of the bolt hitting your face if the lever falls out... it actually gives you a greater accuracy margin due to the reduction of the barrel flex flux capacitor when the lever is gone.

Shoot away!

If its anything like the winchester 94, its got something like a sliding block that slides behind the bolt, that piece would have to fall out too, but then the arm wouldn't strike the firing pin.

It should not fire with the lever off. But on the other hand why would anyone consider firing a weapon of any kind that obviously is in need of repair??????

PO Ackley removed the locking bolt from an 1894 winchester and modified the gun to still shoot when he was testing the 30-30 AI, bolt did not fly out as the straight case gripped the chamber walls. In the 1895 you have the trigger block and the 2 peice firing pin in the 1895 which both rely on the lever closing to allow the gun to fire as was mentioned before.

Okay guys thanks. Remember there are no stupid questions, unless it's the second time you asked it.

But seriously - can I shoot in space if the lever falls out? ;-)
