If you bought a 223 WSSM?

When you rebarrel, you're also rechambering. It's the bolt face that is the issue. The WSSM case heads are quite a bit bigger than their cousins. The case head diameter on your .223 WSSM is .555"(it's based on a .404 Jeffery). A regular .223 case head is .378". So the WSSM requires a magnum size bolt face. That does not mean your rifle can handle the pressures of a magnum cartridge though. Depends on the rifle and how long its action is. If the action is short for the WSSM, you're toast.
Because of the case head size, you're limited to what you can rebarrel to without also modifying the bolt face. You could rebarrel to any of the other WSSM cartridges without too much fuss.
If you're having problems finding ammo, reloading will make that go away.

So you could easily rebarrel it for a .404 Jeffery;-)
There are a couple of interesting wildcats on the WSSM case. It has capacity between the .308 and .30-06, so it's a fine contender for 6.5mm, 7mm, .270, and would do fine with .308 and bigger if the magazine could accomodate the bigger bullets. Personally I'd love to have a Win70 featherweight in .338 or .375 WSSM. You'd lose out on the chrome-lined factory barrel, but big deal--the gas pressure in a larger bore would be extremely mild in comparison.
I see someone on shortmags.org has data up for a .325 WSSM, might be worth checking out.
OR, just shoot the .223 WSSM until the barrel burns out and then decide. It's every bit as fun and useful as the .220 Swift or .22-250.

Same reason some guys like to use obsolete catridges wiht hard to find brass, or wildcats that need brass forming or AI cartridges that need fireforming, or whatever floats your boat..............

If the 375 Ruger was called the 375 Newton, the same people woudl be treating themselves at the thought of owning one!
I am interested in cartridges from well over 100 years ago to rigth now in the present- Other than the 300WSM and the 375 Ruger, I think that the "youngest" cartridge I use was in production before I was born!
I don't care if they are new, old, whose name is on them, etc. If they suit my purpose or pique my interest, I'll get one.
PS: If the 280 AI just came out now, you woudl hear the same talk..... You could just get a 7RM and have easy to find cases, factory ammo everywhere if you forget your ammo at home, the good ol 7RM has been doing it fine since 1962 etc etc...

The 6.5WSSM is a cool little cartridge , for sure. but not
"the end all and be all" of the cartridge world!
Neither is the 6.5WSM, the 350 ( VERY cool!) or the big ol' .450 Noveske.
All are good cartridges for what they are intended for however....

personally, I would love a 358, or 375 WSSM in a marlin Lever rifle...
20 inch barrel would hold about 9+1, MOre capacity than a 356, or 375, and smaller.
