Putting aside for the moment opinions on favourite or non-favourite calibres.. if you could buy only one Marlin lever action model 36 or 336 which one would it be, which year (or range) and why? Thanks

Overlooking your heresy with respect to owning only ONE Marlin:

I wouldnt buy any new Marlins..they are junk. I like my stainless guide gun its nice. All the same I think the new Mirouki Winchesters are nicer.

Marlin use to be a good solid choice for a lever, now it seems abit of a gamble. Maybe buy used if you must have the brand?

X2 on that i would take my win 94 any day

K...... Let me be more specific....... if you don't hate Marlins and prefer Winchesters.......... knowing that the newer marlins are junk......... and only talking 30.30 or .35 Rem.........................

Which Model 36 or 336 carbine or sporter was a good year (s)

Tah.

Technically the 36 and 336 are both 1895's are they not?

Nope. The 336 and the 36 are descended from the Model 1893. The Model 1895 was a large-framed lever rifle in .45-70, .40-65, .40-82, .33 Winchester and a few others. It disappeared IIRC in 1915 and never really returned. The rifle that was reintroduced in the early seventies and which bears the 1895 designation today is in fact a modified 336, or, if you will, it is also an 1893.

I have a Marlin I think is a dandy, a 1958 336A. It is not marked A-DL but has deluxe (GORGEOUS) walnut and nice checkering. It shoots well and holds nicely offhand with its 24-inch barrel.

If I could have only ONE MORE, I would go back 25-odd years to Ellwood Epps' shop. Ellwood was in that day, and I really wanted to buy a very nice original Model 1895 in .33 Winchester, but lacked the seven hundred bucks to purchase it. The old fellow had a good chuckle at this young guy wanting that rifle, and said, "It's a great gun, but then you'll need to start handloading.....how about a .303?"
I'd go back and get that rifle. And have another laugh with Mr. Epps. He was a genuine gent.

Couldn’t agree more.
Sold my 1895G and eventually bought a new Miroku 1892 Trapper Takedown in .44 Mag. Wouldn’t trade it for anything - and with 330 grainers @ 1700 fps it's good for the really big scary creatures.
The Marlin just felt like junk in comparison (think Corvette vs Porsche) ;)

Nice rifle, that Trapper is! How long have you owned it?

OTOH .... I'd hardly call all Marlins "junk". The older ones (pre cross bolt safety) are fine rifles indeed.

I would want an MR-7 chambered in 25-06....Hard to get one seeing as they only came in 270. and 30-06....I have a 270, but can't bring myself to rebarrel it.

Don't have the money to gamble on a Marlin lever.Should have bought a 45-70 before Remington took over............Harold
