Like i said, never owned any 17's. Stories i heard is that it is a very good predator round, and fur friendly. One would have to stay within a shorter range than 223, due to the limits of the small projectiles and windy days would be problematic. Would make a good predator calling rig, groundhogs or prairre dogs to say 200 yards...more on calm days. I am sure there would be lots of smiles and giggles as crows became puffs of feathers.

One sees 17 remingtons on the EE every so often. Even a NIB...new rifle would be less than the cost of the rebarrel and gunsmith work. Bonus there is you have two rifles.
 
I've seen 17 cal bullets fail on average sized summer time coyotes. I love my little 17 and while I do use it while I call coyotes in timber its not a coyote round. With a Stevens I'd go 204 ruger. If it was a a nicer action I'd go something with a more exotic case. No offense intended. I wish they still made the Stevens 200.

Personally I like the 25/45 sharps or 25 copperhead

.458 socom, 18.5" barrel, not much to do with crows but... That would be way cooler!

Too bad there is no conversion bottom metal for it to run beowolf mags...

Hate to break it to you but if you take a closer look at our regulations it actually says, "under .23 caliber" sadly they were smart enough to close that minor loop hole. Maybe some day they'll realize our laws do not make sense today and allow to carry bigger rifles chasing Coyotes and other vermin.

The way it was described to me is that there's a few guys who make the hunting regulations and they don't GAF what you think.
You can submit yearly recommendations till your blue in the face, nothing changes, but you still tell them cause maybe one year they're drunk and will say yes.

20 Extreme all the way! 222 Remington necked down to 20 cal. Awesome little cartridge, easy on the shoulder, fast, accurate, easy on powder and with up to 55 grain bullets can do the job on yotes. 40 grain will work on yotes too.

umm.......

The 458 socom does not use a 223 bolt head for starters. It also feeds from a AR 15 magazine with slight modifications like the 50 beowulf does.

what is this bottom metal conversion you speak of?

intrigued, i have a 222 in a Model 700 that is scary accurate for a factory gun and i had a 700 in 204 Ruger that was great as well but freakishly loud even out of the long varmint pipe it came with...maybe the 20 extreme is the answer to the question i hadn't asked yet

I have a Model 700 that was a 222 heavy barrel that now sports a Bob Jury barrel with a similar contour as the Remington factory barrel chambered as 20 Extreme. Also have a lightweight Savage Axis XP that was a 223. Super lightweight now a 20 Extreme with a short (18") fluted barrel. Got it as light as I could for Yes Dear to be able to handle. It shoots pretty good (moa) out to 150 yards - that's all I've really done with it as that is what the sight line is from the porch. It is the porch gun. I've shot the 700 out to 400 yards on an AR 500 steel target (coyote) with a reactive kill zone of about 4x5" and rocked it every time.
