Gentlemen
...change one thing on the M1 Garand Rifle working on it in the testing with Mr. Garand, what change would you make to this new weapon system. There are two (2) rules that you must go by. One NO DETACHABLE MAG. The second rule is it must remain as a SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE only. Follow those and see what you would come up with.

x2 especially since you did away with the detachable mag option or shorten it overall and make it a 7mm.

chamber it in 276 with a 10 round mag. but of course, it being in 30-06 was beyond garand's control.

That sounds like a good idea but for us at this time that would have made it into 5 shot rifle for us now, I would rather have the 8 shot enbloc myself.

10 rounds had it been invented would be exempt the legislation on mag size in the same way that lee Enfields are!

Hmm, the gas system is pretty much flawless IMO, the aperture sights are excellent, what else can we change, maybe reduce the weight by using composites where possible, or better yet, bullpup it!

All of this " what would you do "seems to be a rather flawed approach. It doesn't make any difference what we would do now or could do now it was what was done then with what was known, expected using existing technology. Personally I think the M1 was a fine weapon within the limitations of it's time and tehcnology and stands well as it is, not how we want it now. Joe

keep in mind that the original design DID have a detachable box mag.
The japs made a clone with a 10 round capacity which used strippers.
They never got into production but a few examples have survived.

I very much doubt that, look at the SKS, it has a 5 shot limit though it has a 10 shot internal box mag fed by stripper clips. Also the Lee Enfield is a bolt action so it is not as scarey and it was used by our people during two World Wars. Yes we did use the Garand in limited numbers after WWII but most people including politicians don't know that.

If we couldn't have a detachable magazine for it...in terms of making it a better battle rifle, I'd modify the clip system to eliminate the tell-tale "ping" of the en bloc clip being ejected and also permit a G.I. to "top-up" the magazine without having to eject the partially spent en bloc clip. Just don't ask me how to do it!:)

Bolt actions have no magazine limit, reason they mention it in the regulations is because any magazine that fits in a semi-auto rifle needs to be limited to 5, but surviving examples of semi-automatic Lee-Enfield rifles are rare so they wanted to clear that up. The M1 would have been capped to 5rds. If the SKS example doesnt suit you the FN49 (similar consept to the M1) also needed to be limited. :)

Personally only thing I'd change is for it to have a universal flashhider that can accept rifle gernades so soliders didn't have to carry a lancher as well with them. :)

I agree the sights are outstanding (a bit quirky to set, but very good otherwise), but I disagree that the gas system in perfect. There is a hollow rod 2 1/2' long flailing around under the barrel. It has a spring inside, and a short connector rod with an elbow and hooks. The fact that this elbow and its related lifters and pivots functions a clip and cycle the bolt is remarkable in itself. I'd say shorten the operating rod and even out some of the critical angles.

The second point about the clip has already been made. Garand got the idea from a French WWI rifle. It was a Continental idea that some sort of holder was better than a magazine. Like I wrote above, it is remarkable that he managed to devise a mechanism to convert gas force on the piston into so many other motions. Great solution, but it is still the only rifle to do it that way.
