If you could...M1

The gas port so close to the muzzle I think is what makes the M1 such an accurate semi auto so I wouldn't change that. I would modify the oprod to have a seperate piston and a more in-line stroke.....a long piston, then shorten the oprod to compensate for the difference. Just to reduce some of the stresses put on the long curvy 3 piece welded oprod:)
And an adjustable gas nut similar to the shuster set up......but just for civillian use:)

If we couldn't have a detachable magazine for it...in terms of making it a better battle rifle, I'd modify the clip system to eliminate the tell-tale "ping" of the en bloc clip being ejected and also permit a G.I. to "top-up" the magazine without having to eject the partially spent en bloc clip. Just don't ask me how to do it!

X2, you beat me to it, a way to top up for sure.

Yes, you are right, thank you John@.
Regarding the grenade launcher Dimitri, Reese Surplus, has former BM 59, tri-compensator muzzle brakes that have been modified to fit any Garand rifle.

I have one, and that long brake does wonders on cutting down muzzle jump.
Of course one can argue for a while concerning its merits, but I have one and like it.

This Italian muzzle brake/grenade launcher is known to be the best design by far, for cutting the flash and muzzle climb. Oh by the way, it goes without saying, I will never fire grenades with it.....

Brutus,

That maybe so I dont know much about the Italian M1 conversions to the BM-59, but still my idea still stands as it was ment to be something that Garand didn't do which would have been neat. Actually its the only thing I can think of that one might want to do to the M1 rifle. :)

Gentlemen,
Some great comebacks. I said NO Detachable Mag. I would have setup a 20 round mag that was NOT Detachable but like the Garand's son the M14 loading from a stripper clip. For ready load and toping off you mag.
Thanks again guys some great input.
