If you could only have one rifle/scope...

Probably a Winchester Model 70 SS with a 22" #3 barrel. .375 h&h with a front blade sight and talley with the pop up peep and QR rings. Leupold 2.5-8 on top. Echols Stock.
If only NA, switch the cartridge out to 30-06.

One rifle / one scope?

Pre 64 Win 70 in .30-06 or .300 H&H Magnum topped with a matte blue Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40mm in Talleys or Leupold dual dovetails.

NAA.

Man that thing is ugly. And no I'm not jealous. At all.

Haha! Can't see that ol' thing making you jealous. You've owned, what, 6+ different rifles of that very blueprint?;)

This one may be a little homely, but, I like her.:) Gonna have another one just like it soon, 'cept with a smaller hole in the barrel...

Looking forward to pics of your Mashburn.

I'm curious why so many folks are chosing mid-range optics for their rifles...

I'd think it's cuz the 2-12ish power range is about perfect for almost anything us fudds will be dealing with rangewise. I've shot straight 6X leupolds to 400 yards with no problems hitting 10-14" gongs. I'd imagine most people are thinking 10ish power is enough to have lots of fun past 400, yet still have the comfort of 3ish power when stuff gets close

Hhhmmm, I think I need to set my sights higher ... All I want is a smooth running lever action .270, with a 4-14x40 scope (a plain Bushnell would be plenty good enough).

My Sako TRG 30-06 that I sold a few years back. That was one good shooter........

Now to find a Rem 700 replacement for it................

You can't replace a Sako TRG-S with a 700,....there's NO comparison..I've owned both....that said,...the Sako TRG-S's I've owned are gone and I do have a few 700's here.....

By mid-range I meant quality wise, not magnification.

could do pretty much anything with this rifle

There is not one thing homely about that rifle. That is a sharp piece. Perfection!

I think it is sacriledge to think of owning only one gun. A CZ550fs in .30-06 with a Zeiss 3-9x40 would handle just about anything I would hunt. Don't own this one, but I held one last weekend and lost sleep over it.

I guess if I could only keep one, it would be this:

IMG_1386.jpg

-Pre 64 in .270 Winchester (1947 action)
-7 pounds 7 ounces as pictured above
-Legend edge stock, endura paint by Mitch Kendall.
-Action honed and massaged by Bill Leeper
-Post-64 type gas block installed to block the left raceway
-23" factory barrel turned down, bore and throat look new with Bill's standard recessed crown.
-Bolt stop built up and checkered
-Factory trigger a dead crisp 2 1/2 pounds
-Bottom metal is the early thin factory steel
-S&K rings and bases
-FXII 6X with LR reticle

If I could pick one I didn't own, it wouldn't be far off from this one.
