I'm curious why so many folks are chosing mid-range optics for their rifles...
Because a mid-range scope (in terms of power) will work at long range. A long range scope is an arsehole of a thing at real close range.
I had a chance at a charging baboon last summer (I'm not making this up). A pair of them ran in from my right and when I turned to try for a shot (at about 15 yards when they pulled up) I couldn't see a damned thing through the 3-9x scope on the rifle. But at 1.5x I would have had a chance.
BUM - I think you missed my post after the question - I meant mid-range quality, not magnification. For example, there are quite a few Leupold 6x fans - the Schmidt & Bender 6x42 is also available, and even with a 1" tube. Lots of VX-III 2.5-8x36 fans; why not a Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10x40 Summit or a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36?
Zeiss, S&B, and Swarovski all make fantastic scopes in (depending on manufacturer): 1.5-6x42, 1.7-10x42, 3-10x42, 3-12x42 etc.
Those scopes have the smaller objective lens that we in North America prefer. Price wasn't a factor in the initial question, so I am curious why so many folks skip these exceptionally high quality optics.
This is especially curious when their dream rifle includes expensive stocks, gunsmithing, barrels, triggers and other parts. You want to put together a 1st class rifle, but top it off with middling optics.![]()

No offence 1899 but did it ever dawn on you that some people would never get caught with them even when they were for free b/c they are the German scopes? I am a little annoyed every time somebody keeps boasting about uberZeiss for instance and putting the Weaver, Bushnell and Leupold in undermensh category....
No offence taken. You can be annoyed, but the fact of the matter is that the scopes I mentioned are optically far superior to Weaver, Bushnell and Leupold.
Some of you guys have no imagination. You can only have one, doesn't have to be one you already have...
I'd probably send many thousand of $$ to Martini and have him build me something like this in .300WM, with custom mounts and an S&B 3-12x42...![]()
Speaking for myself only, I've never peered through a VX3 right dark or first light in the morning and thought "this is terrible, I need more scope". It's just a scope system I know my way around and have confidence in. I've never played with the high end European stuff so I couldn't really go on a limb and say I'd run one for the rest of my life (even though this whole thread is mearly childish fantasy)![]()
Before hunting, check local sunrise-sunset times. You may only
hunt from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset
Perhaps that is the issue. I have done exactly what you said and compared the Leupy with a Swarovski - side by side. The difference is amazing. Even in daylight the higher end scopes offer incredible clarity and resolution.
I'm not disrespecting peoples' choices; I just found it interesting that folks will fantasize about all these nice rifles and not go for the best in optics. And if one fellow says he doesn't want to buy a product because it is German, then that is ok by me - I don't want to buy Chinese products.
Perhaps you could do something for me - your regs say:
According to the National Research Council:
http://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/services/hia/sunrise-sunset.html
Sunrise in London, Ontario will be at 7:20am tomorrow
In Thunder Bay it is at 8:08am.
Take a look at the edge of a cutblock from 100-200 yards at 1/2 hour before sunrise and tell me what you think. If you have a good set of binos then look with those, and then compare to your scope. In BC the regs say 1 hour, so the difference is even more profound.
There is not one thing homely about that rifle. That is a sharp piece. Perfection!

Or, some of us know what we like and have it...
Besides, even though it wasn't part of the OP's intent, if I had the money to drop on a Saterlee or S&B... I wouldn't. That kinda moola would be a big chunk of a Alaskan Grizzly hunt...![]()
Brad that thing is hideous...you've went down a notch in my books. If you want a clunky old mauser I think my buddy has a few gustavs in his basement...I'll spray paint a nice faux stainless finish on it for you...I'll even rocker gaurd the stock![]()
