if you could only have one rifle...what would it be?

I'd take a Browning A-Bolt II Ti or a Rem 700 Ti and give it a 23.75" Gaillard stainless super light barrel in 280 AI, that's what I am thinking about doing for the one all rifle

I just saw the Thread title and quickly replied earlier with the above, not for $1200 that's for sure,

for $1200

I'd find a used rifle in good shape and spend the better portion on optics or find a complete kit up for grabs,
so in that case a Browning A-Bolt II, or Rem 700, or Ruger M77 in SS in 280Rem and spend a few dollars at the G-Smith having the chamber reamed out to 280 AI

That ought to keep with in budget.

If not 7MM Rem Mag

Something in 30-06. I have one rifle in my safe that I'll never part with and it's a Model 70 Featherweight XTR in 30-06. It shoots very well and just feels good to shoulder and carry.
welllllll, if it ever came down to u can only have one gun
period. that means some kind of govt laws and means hard times. i would keep my TC R55 all weather 22 LR
2 casses of ammo 10,000 bullets . and a few boxes of long standard vel for super quiet shots.

I'd probably just go with my Stevens 200 in 300wm, with my Mueller 3-10x44 sport dot. It ain't pretty by any means, but so long as you don't piss off any grizzlies, you'll be fine. Even then, it's better than a lot of others, just not ideal. All this for under $600, spend the other $600 on an RCBS rockchucker supreme reloading kit, dies, bullets, powder, primers, etc.
But seriously, who wants to be the man with one rifle??? Between this one, the 10/22 and the 22-250, I'm good to go. Don't worry, it won't take long, the rifle, will become 2, then 3, etc. I've spent a total of less than $1800 for these three including scopes. Whitefalls.ca is your friend for optics. No-one will drool over a mueller, but they work for less $$$.

Remington 700 40-SX Tactical .308
Badger Ordnance 45moa scope base
Badger Ordnance USMC M40A3 (low) rings
Schmidt & Bender 5-25 x 56 Police Marksman II LP with P4 reticil
Badger Ordnance Gen 2 Design Angle Co-Sine Indicator Kit
Trijicon Docter Red Dot Scope / Reflex Sight 3.5 MOA mounted on The B-COMP 30mm Ring
Harris Bi-Pod
Turner AWS sling

That will do me just fine :D
Oh wait.... that DOES do me just fine :D

$1200 and not shtf???

Carl Gustaf left-hand 1900 super lux .300 win mag, somewhat like this one: http://www.widforss.se/auktion/auktion_v04/images_v04/V04_286.jpg
Then put a VX11 3-9x40 on top.
Gun was a deal at $400, scope was $450, rings, caps and sling another hundred and something, and we're still more than $200 under budget. It sure would make a mess of the small game, but at least you know it will put anything else down. Ducks on the wing would be a challenge.

....that must be the third post this week about that gun. I really like it.

Another choice would be a combo gun in 12ga/30-06 or even a good deal on a drilling.

I know it's not a rifle but for all around hunting any season I'd have to say a 12 Gauge with a deer barrel and a ghost ring site. The simple fact is your able by regs to hunting anything that moves in North America.
The Ammo is expensive. It's a poor trainer and it's not a rifle, but right shot and mixture of chokes and you can hunt anything by the regs .

Course it's a jack of all trades and master of none and it's not a rifle. So flame away guys flame.

Just had a thought (It could happen:)) The Rossi matched sets they make one in 17 HMR/.270 Win./.50 Cal. with quick detach scope rings and a good scope. Covers small game, Muzzleloader and rifle season. Course it's not a nice looking rifle and I have always wondered about the quality of them but what kind of world would it be with just one rifle :(.

theyre actually not bad quality. building a hinge-action single shot isnt exactly rocket science. from everything i read and heard from owners they are a very good value and are accurate.

the only problem is that you will wait a year till you get one of the trifecta 3-barrel sets, the dealers are THAT flaky and slow. many gun shops refuse to order them for you for that reason alone.

the three-barrel set with 20ga., .243 and .22lr for $300 is a really good deal, and the youth models with shorter stocks/barrels are very compact and packable for hiking/camping. just a matter of getting them into the country in a timely manner.

Hope you don't mind me answering but if you look at the top Ellwood Epps has them in the new section I don't know if it's in stock but he does have one in his new section right now I was looking at it yesterday and wondering. It's in .17 HMR/.270 Win./.50 Cal muzzleloader.
But I don't know how much you wanted the .22Lr Vs the .17HMR.
