If you could only have one shotgun for bird....

I would go with a Browning O/U lightweight in 20 gauge. More than enough for upland game, and alot more fun on Geese and Ducks. I find pumps to get boring.

I have a winchester 1200 w/ a Full and Mod barrels. It gets the job done all the time :D

AGREE TOO,I said my Ithaca mod. 37/16g to breath some new life into her
I have the Win. mod.1200 w/vent rib,winchoke barrel(F,M,IC),smoothbore deer barrel and a 18.5" ventrib cyl.bore barrel.Thats all I've ever needed.
The orig. shotgun(Win.1200) was my X-mas present in 1989.

Only one gun

Thanks for the replies...but I am still not sure what is required as far as 20 vs 12, 2-3/4" vs 3" vs 3-1/2" shells. I guess I will take the course and see what people are using.

I was under the impression you needed a 12Ga....3 or 3-1/3 for ducks - you know the bigger the better. The I really like the Benelli, 870 and the 1300 also looks very nice.....but then again I'l love to get a 391 again....loved that gun!

Thanks all.
John

Here's a couple here............

Top one is a 26"/12ga Special Purpose. Synthetic stock has been replaced with a "Police" set. 3'' chamber w/tubes.

Lower SG is a 21"/20ga Special Field. 3'' chamber w/tubes. Very handy for upland :D I also have a couple of SxSs in 20ga as well

Your talking waterfowl. 3" shells is more than enough. With steel shot you need speed not volume. I use a Beretta A390 for ducks and I shoot hand loads, 2 3/4" 1oz #3 steel 1400fps. I got my limit of 6 ducks on Saturday. As for the shotgun I love my A390 never had a problem with it ejects everything you feed it. I also have a 1300 winchester as a back up.(never used it yet) If you are going to get a pump go with the Remington 870. This is a great pump gun.

I don't hear anyone saying Reminton 1100,model 11,or A-5's?

Whats up nobody like John Browning?

Bob :)
Well the 1100 wasn't a Browning design. But now that you ask I don't care for John Moses Browning's shotgun designs and especially don't care for the Auto 5 and by extension the Remington Model 11. They were masterpieces a century ago but in today's world there are better options.

I knew the 1100 wasn't his,so in general I guess you aren't too impressed with his son Val's Browning Double auto either!!!!

They are quite old and slow and HEAVY,but built for the long haul!!

Maybe a hundred years or more!!!

Points well taken maybe more for collecting than for carrying!!!

Just another John Browing(heavy obsolite 1911 fan)!!

Bob :(

I was very impressed with the Double Auto. Until I fired a Nova no gun kicked the snot out of me as much.

I love the 1911 and believe the locking system developed by Browning for larger caliber pistols was genius. His development of gas operated firearms was ground breaking but I'm not one of those who believes everything he did was magical.

I have an 870 and 1100 ..... I have trouble deciding which to take... but generally for walking I like the 870; for the blind I like the 1100. My 1100 is modified and pre "Remchoke" ... I have read that the 1100 Remchoke barrels are a little heavier and less "lively" than the older 1100's ... don't know if this is true or imaginary ... but I really like my 1100 fwiw. AP

Dont know much about shotguns but is a Winchester "campdefender" any good for hunting birds ?

I am thinking of writing my hunting course and was wondering if I could only have one shotgun to start hunting ducks/upland bird what would it be.

I was looking at the 870 3" Mag. in a 26" bbl. What would I use 3" shells for, and what bbl length would be best for duck/turkey/upland.....26" or 28"

Thanks in advance!

I find a 12g much too heavy and way too much gun for upland birds... but that could be a product of the type of terrain and type of cover that I hunt in.

Your area might be totally different. I like a light 20g o/u or sxs with 26 or 28" barrels.

I'm just thinking about getting into the migratory birds, and I plan to use my Rem 870 Wingmaster pump and / or my Beretta A390 semi auto with 28" bbls.

Turkey .... no idea there. But my guess is I'd use the same guns as I would for waterfowl .... but different choke.
