Im sure there have been posts like this before but if you could only have one rifle, what rifle and what caliber would it be from your current collection?
I guess I'd hafta say one of my Browning's, quite likely, but so hard to say which one, a Micro Medallion or BLR or Stainless Stalker, prolly in 7mm-08 or 260 or 257R or 308, I just don't know for sure, or maybe the Sako A7. I may change my mind at the last min! Maybe the pre '64 Win 94 30-30 or 32 spl. Ruger M77-44Mag? Ruger No.1 A 30-06 or AB in 25-06! It's a question that I can't answer until the last min on hunting morning while going out the door! So sorry for such a vage answer!
..I'd have to keep my Bill Leeper built Pre'64 Model 70 in 308 Norma in the McMillan stock topped with the Leupold 3.5-10X...it would work for most anything anywhere.
I have actually given this a bunch of thought over the years and given where I hunt and what I hunt it would be without hesitation the 340 Wby. It will kill all the animals on the face of the planet including elephant, and I would not be handicapped for sheep or goats............without a doubt a 340 Wby with a 26" barrel.
It's an interesting thought that can be hard to decide. Keep it coming. I've had this discussion with a few friends and it's always the debate. Most say 30-06 because of the wide grains of bullets yet you can hunt just about most game in canada as for rifle its a Ford/Dodge/Chevy debate Thoughts?
well, i just cant have one rifle. But, if i really hade to decide it would be something in 308 most likely. probably my savage scout. i really like my cz 452 and 455 in 22lr but, thats doesnt really meet my big game hunting needs. 308 will take anything in canada with a good shot placement and the ammo can be found almost anywere.
Probably for me I'd have to keep my Husqvarna lightweight in .308. Not necessarily all for practical reasons, but partially just because this rifle feels so good to me, and carries so well. It is equipped with a williams peep which suits my purposes very well.
For the world, the .375 H&H.
For North America, the .300 Win.
For Saskatchewan, the STW.
Since I would only have one, selling off the rest of my junk to pay for it leaves the field wide open.
Come to think of it, selling everything and buying a small selection with names like Echols, Miller or Martini on 'em might make more sense than what I'm doing now.
If I had to make a choice, 270 win Ruger All Weather,Tikka 30-06 Stainless, 338 Win Ruger
Stainless,7x57 Ruger, 300 win Mag Rem 700,45/70 XLR. 30-30 marlins I think I may have to hide a few. My 45/70 Marlin XLR Would probably be my choice, casting my own bullets and I have a good supply of brass. I just hope I never have to make the choice. MIKE

My 340 would be on a mid weight bolt action with a fairly light 26" barrel, magnaported and built by the likes of Martini, wearing a 3.5-10 Zeiss Diavari, 8-8 1/2 lbs all up.
Like Dogleg said if I sold off the rest of my sh!t I could have it made by David Miller, Holland & Holland or Rigby if I so chose.
