If you could only have one

Old faithful ~ Ruger M77 (tang safety) in .308

Well in my complete new guy ignorance I would pick one of the better made combination gun/rifle weapons that had 12 ga. shot gun and .308 barrels.
Red.

M70 pre 1964 Winchester featherweight, Timney trigger, very low profile Burris one piece mount that has a peep that can be flipped up and used in case something nasty were to happen to the 4x Leupold scope. Front post hand made, and works well.

Chambered in .30/06 using Winchester brass, stiff loads pushing 180 grain Speer Spitzers.

Currently as a 22" Shilen barrel. Original did not survive a horse incident.

SAD DAY!!! ABSOLUTELLY HAD TO? REM 700 RMR custom,McMillan stocked, 300wsm Leupold 3.5-10x40CDS and my handloading bench.
This rig will cover our continent quite effectively.

I have more rifles than I have counted. 300+

The one I have taken hunting the most often is a sporter Mauser in 358Win. I seems to handle perfectly, has a good trigger, shoots accurately and is a perfect caliber.

It is not my 'best" rifle, but based on the fact that I choose to take it out the most, I guess it is the one I would keep if I could only have one.

As it happens, it is for sale:

A Blaser R93 with a few barrels and scope mounts would be my choice if allowed...or a T/C Encore would be even more versatile, since it could be equipped with a 12-gauge shotgun barrel. However, I assume these would be considered cheating within the spirit of this debate.

So if forced to choose one gun/chambering I would go with the .375H&H, in either a Sako, Winchester or most probably Blaser. Having sold all the rest of my guns, I would be planning on spending that cash on a few more exotic hunts. The H&H would be legal for anything, anywhere...and the Blaser takedown is perfect for travel. I use it a lot...took a deer with it this year...and have total confidence in it.

The .340 Weatherby would be a bit better if serious long range shooting was ever in the cards, but it doesn't meet the minimum-caliber requirement in a lot of countries for African dangerous game. The .375 fits the bill, plus it's a sentimental favourite.:)

I'm with lledwood, only my Husqvarna Lightweight is in 7x57 and soon to wear a Leupold 4x scope. The gun fits me just right and I can carry it all day and not even notice it.

Haven't there been enough of these "one rifle" threads in the past couple weeks... without resurrecting an old thread???

Oh well... I will go with a Ruger #1 International in 7X57.
