If you had $1000 to spend on a new AR.....

AndrewNS I could lend you all the tools needed and build it yourself...

And If you need anything from Brownells I could also order it for you with my dealer account.

Only short barrel available under a grand in Canada is norinco

Almost everything from the states will have an 16"

Others around 1000 tax in are dpms, s&w, omni polymer, and maybe a few others

1200 + tax will get you something pretty nice though and opens up your options a lot more

You can also build a nice one for 1200 or less depending on all options

Unless you are going into combat, you don't need to drop 2-3 grand

Are you refering to building a custom gun? I really wouldn't know where to start when looking at components...

If I buy something second hand, like off of the EE, $1200 all in shipped should get me a fairly good rifle, right?? I mean, if I can get a fairly good new rifle for $1200 + tax, then I should be able to get something of a little higher quality used for the same money... Oh wait, the EE prices are usually the same as retail... My mistake. lol

I just bought a core 15 AR-15, its my first, and im looking forwards to seeing how she performs at the range. Getting into tactical target shooting at my local range.

Others have given you very accurate advice. $1200 buys you a US made flat top in Canada. I bought a Windham Weaponery AR, it is milspec all the way and a really well made gun. At 100 yards I can feed bullets into bullet holes - yeah you're right, mostly luck!

Ok, so in killing a night at home alone I decided to spend it learning about the AR platform.

So far I have decided that I want a rifle with a direct impingement system. I like the idea of the shear magnatude of interchangable parts.

Some great deals were to be had over the Boxing week sales. Two that came to mind were Ruger SR556E and Sig Sauer M400, both were under $1000!
I was dying to buy either of those, but having funds around Christmas time doesn't really fly in a house with 4 kids. I fully intend to save for next Christmas and pray those same deals get made.

I say go Norinco ! Not sure if i just got really good ones or something lol ? Its shoots better groups than all 4 of my US made ARs except my NM Colt Hbar 20''! Yes theres some machining marks on the receivers but the 60s-70s Colts were the same way , great rifles . I dare say the barrel quality on the Norinco is better than all ARs in your price range , theres really good full chrome lining of the bore and chamber, and aggressive staking of the gas key and castle nut . They truly remind me of early Colts .. I would bet the Norinco would come out on top in a torture test of ARs in your price range .

Lol I built my 7.62x39 EE/dealer ar for about $800, there are major deals for parts on the EE as well as guns

Do not listen to this. Handle them side by side. The norcs are absolute garbage.

So just because a gun has superficial machining marks its garbage ?? Were Colts made in the 70s garbage? Have you shot a Norinco or just looked at one ?? Looks dont mean #### , thousands of rounds do .. i have seen many ARs choke up in a carbine class and the Norcs were running strong ,, Trust me i would love to hate Chinese crap but i give credit where credit is due.. OP dont listen to this guy he judges guns by looks alone. We are talking about rifles not jewelry .
