If you had $500 to spend on a firearm for a friendly competition what would you buy and how would you test your skill vrs a buddies skill with said gun?
$500 is the limit for firearm and any needed accessories.
Can be any type of firearm. I posted here for more general view.
Examples include 9" barreled shotguns and compete in clay games or find a deal on a entry level bolt action package and shoot at random unknown distant targets

All in all its for good fun and most likely the guns will be donated afterwards to either a charity or to someone starting out that cant afford to buy a rifle or shotgun or rimfire whatever we may buy

Lets see who has the most budget friendly imagination

A lever action .22 with iron sights. Can get a Henry in yhat price range and they are respected.

Anything with a scope in that price range will suck, .22 you will get comfortable with very quickly if you have never shot before, lever action would be fun to shoot rapidly and you could come up with some fun plinking games.

Remington 783's are $429 at my local store. They come in a pile of calibres but pick .223 and then share a case of ammo with your buddy. Try to find serial numbers somewhat near each other. Same gun, same ammo, dangerous to pretty far out just stock. My local store is Great North Precision, you might be able to find it cheaper from a sponsor here.

I recently grabbed a Marlin XT in 22Mag for $199 and a 4-12 AO Bushnell Trophy XLT for $99 from site sponsor Easthill Outdoors...

So there are deals out there that fit your criteria for a little friendly competition

Cheers

For $500 you could get 2x Lee Enfield sporters and test your skills by completing the "Mad Minute". The rifles could then make a new hunter pretty happy. I know I would have the most fun with this option at least...

$100 cooey single shot 22, $400 of ammo. First one to shoot all the ammo wins the other cooey.

Or buy a couple Mauser sporters from tradex and see who can get the best accuracy.

I think a quality .22 rimfire would make for a great fun challenge and be a great gift for after. It is very rewarding at least to me to stretch a .22 beyond its expected capabilities, shooting steel or clay pigeons beyond 200 yards can be great fun.

I like the idea of a .22 with a combination of skill testing challenges. First .22 silhouettes, which are shot off hand. Then 4 position - offhand at 25 yards, sitting or kneeling at 50 yards, prone at 100 yards and bench rest at 150 or 200 yards- either group size or score.

That’s a fair amount of shooting and covers many skills. You can buy a decent rifle and scope within your budget and the ammo is very inexpensive too. IMO (for basic training) nothing beats a .22

To update this. We settled on new savage 64f $139.99 + tax from a local source and upped the anti with a short barreled 12ga. I choose the canuck defender regulator combo from bullseye. It has a 13" barrel choked for mobile threads and wood stocks for 299.99+ tax. Should be fun competetion
