If you had a $1000 to buy a new rifle right now what would you get?

So thinking of selling the SKS and ammo and maybe getting something new( or new to me). Its in pretty mint condition but I don't ever take it out anymore, just sits there collecting dust.

Currently I have a .223, 243, 308, 30-06, a couple 303 Brits, and many 22lr rifles. So nothing in those calibers.

I was thinking maybe a lever in 30-30, or maybe some sort of combo gun. Got an itch to get something new, just don't know what I want 🤔

Might I suggest finding a something in 6.5mm Its great for longer range target shooting. Theres lots of rifles in chamberings like the 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5 PRC or 6.5x55 Swede. Put a nice tactical style scope on it and learn ballistics or download a free ballistics program from hornady. You will be hitting steel out to 500 to 600 meters in no time.

As to what rifle you may wish to purchase, try and find a used tikka on the forum if you want to stay in the $1K price point. Ive had great luck with them and they tend to be very accurate. Sometimes you can find a new savage on sale in that price point and they are often quite accurate, I just dont like the feel of them but your milage may vary. I would stay away from the AXIS line as I have had some problems with them.

I think your instinct of a lever 30-30 is probably the right one if you are wanting a direct replacement for the role.

$1000 is pretty tight budget these days you might not even get a Turkish or good used one for that.

Do you hand load?

Henry Long Ranger or BLR in .308 (new or used) with downloaded ammo would be like a 30-30 or 7.62x39, with the option for full power when needed.

But, $1000, I’d just get the cheapest bolt action rifle I could find and splurge on a good piece of glass instead

A .357, .44 or .45 lever action carbine might be cool.

Wathever you buy, it's got to make you say "hell yeah" when you pick it up. So you want to get it out of the safe.

Wild card: also sell a few more rifles and buy a really high end one that's gonna be so pleasant to operate that you'll want to shoot it all the time.

I've been eyeing up those M96 6.5 Swedes over in Intersurplus for quite some time. Something about the 6.5 Swede keeps bringing me back to them

my 2 cents: wait another paycheck and get a 38/357 lever action rifle, looks like that would compliment what you already have.
I love my henry, bought it used but it was a tiny little bit more than 1K

Do you have a shotgun?

Shotguns are fun 😁
