If you had a 404 Jeffery sized action...

I mean, I need a 300 or 338 RUM like I need a hole in my head. So it stands to reason that a 404 would make the most sense for me. If I lived out West and there wasn't a big shortage of components then I would probably convince myself to build up a 338 RUM or Edge for very long range fun. But here in Nova Scotia? Pretty much pointless, though I did find some 300 RUM brass in the discard bin at the range a while back...real head-shaker that was.

I agree, I think that the .404 is a sensible round for big game in Nova Scotia. Unfortunately mine is getting a little extra work done on it so I have to revert to a 9.3x74R and a .375 H&H for now. I’ve shot enough stuff with 6.5s etc to know I don’t need the big bores here, but if Im going to hunt dangerous game I’d rather do that with a rifle that I’m completely familiar with and confident in. Plus I’m at least a little deranged....

I've considered taking my 470 into the blind just to freak out the old boy I hunt with. If it was, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, scoped like Douglas' (the now-banned C-FBMI) 470 it would be a lot more useful. But it's short enough to make getting in and out of the blind a lot easier!

When .404 based cartridges come up on CGN, why is there no mention of the .404 based Imperial cartridges? Canadian designed, custom rifles made on the Sako A-3 Receivers.

In a sense, they Imperials are discussed... afterall the RUM cartridges are stolen Imperial Magnums.

I'd keep the action and slowly start assembling the parts for your rifle including reloading kit. You need to take up reloading like all the rest of the cool kids.

I think Chris Griesbach has a 404 reamer.

For me the imperials fall in the same category, hard to source brass, strictly reloading.

how about a 404 version of the eargesplitten loudenboomer?

Or just read P.O. Ackley's for some other wild ones, given you have money to burn.

And, I was fond of the 303 Imperial Magnum but I knew it would die, so never tried it.

What sort of action are we talking about anyway? If it's a Mauser, it would be sacrilege to chamber it for anything other than .404. If it's a Remington 700, then any small bore speedster would seem more appropriate.

I agree with SuperCub. Keep the action and build a 404J. Really cant go wrong. More than enough for anything on the planet with less ouch.
I built mine on a stainless Win M70 Classic 375H&H donor rifle (that everyone on here that likes DG rifles keeps wanting me to sell LOL)

You can find Hornady made 404 Jeffrey cases from site sponsor's , but hard to find Norma brass right now?
I'm collecting everything as I can find it, not so bad then$$$.
Australia is excellent place to look for ammo or components, the 404 is popular over there.
