If You Had to Pick One Powder...

Maybe this has been done here before? But I thought is was an interesting idea. Sort of like the dreaded 'one rifle' discussions, if you had to get by with one powder which would you pick?

I've only been reloading for a few years and learned quite a bit from this forum:cool: the books and a bit of experience now. The powder that I seem to use the most for my rifle stable is boring old IMR 3031. It works awsome in most of my lever guns; 30-30, 375 Win, 45-70 which I use quite a bit. My 'go to' bolt gun seems to be a 308 right now and I've found slightly better powders for it but none do much better than IMR 3031. This choice would leave some of the high stepp'n cartridges (270 wby for instance) kind of SOL but no powder can do everthing I guess..

What would you guys pick for the best all round propellant?

IMR 4064 works extremely well in my 3006, 308 and 243's.

H322 is great in my 204 and 222 with all bullet weights.

I like Winchester 760 for my 30-06, .303 British and .257 Roberts. IMR 4350 shot almost as well, but not nearly as easy to work with, needed a long necked funnel to get in the cases, with determined tapping on the side. The ball powder flows like a dream, and is even more accurate.

Varget, 4064 and 4320 are all basically the same thing and - while not interchangable - should all be useful in all the same applications. Varget has the advantage of greater temperature stability

I choose gun powder.

I'm thinking I should finally give this Varget a go..

You know, I've tried Varget in 223 and 308. Now, maybe it's just my particular guns but so far I have not been impressed with this powder. I know a lot of reloaders rave about it, I have managed better performance with other powders. Like I said, maybe it's just my particular guns.

What's the point in reloading if you can't tailor your round to extract the maximum performance? One powder doesn't do that.

Forced to choose I guess it would be Varget for rifles and Unique for shotguns.

ReLoder 15 - it works in all my calibres (35whelen, 35WhelenAI, 350WSM, 350RM, 358Win, 356Win, 260Rem, 30-30) and even "optimal" for a good many of my load combinations also I think.

Hi

I would have to guess that you have never fired any .308 reloads loaded with IMR3031 through a crony yet. Because if you would have, you would know 3031 sucks in .308 win. lots of noise, lots of flame, poor velocity.

Reloder 15 is a great powder for .308
I am using it instead of Varget. More consistent results. It would seem the people making Varget are still messing with the formula.

Well I shoot cast bullets and I guess I would have to go with Win 231. Can use it with cast bullets in every caliber listed on this thread. May not work perfectly but certainly would work well enough for hunting purposes.

FYI I have had some great results with Reloader 15 in my M14 under cast bullets.

Take Care
