If You Had to Pick One Powder...

Varget if you can find it! works in the old man's 7x57 know it will be good in mine when I can find some. awsome in 280, 243, 30/06 and some others I load for.

I could launch SMK's in .223 and .308 using VARGET all the time. Wait a minute. I think I do, since discovering the temperature insensitivity of Varget and SMK's in those two calibers I have left my other few rifle powders on the shelf. Nothing beats the stuff. I've even come to like the smell of burnt Varget at the range!

IMR 4320 works quite well in everything from 222 to 45-70.

You would be amazed at how versatile it actually is. Hope we never have to go that route, but if we did that would be the one I would choose.

Hi

I would have to guess that you have never fired any .308 reloads loaded with IMR3031 through a crony yet. Because if you would have, you would know 3031 sucks in .308 win. lots of noise, lots of flame, poor velocity.

I find this is a curious comment.

Velocity with 3031 as a propellant behind bullets lighter than 168 grs seems to match several other powders when loaded in the .308. The burning rate of 3031 falls mid way between 4198 and 4895. Thus, 3031 was developed for use in medium capacity cases, and although not my favorite, I've used it with success in the .222, .270, .30-06, .350 magnum, .45-70 and the .458.

There is no doubt that Re-15 would be a better choice for the .308 when heavier bullets are chosen, but for what most folks use a .308 for, 3031 would do nicely.

For rifles and handguns (many rifles shoot handgun cartridges) - Unique

Tolerable loads can be contrived from Unique for every handgun and rifle cartidge, and those loads can deliver decent velocities (1000-1500 fps) and accuracies for cast and jacketed bullets.

Just rifles - H4350 can produce a tolerable load for just about the whole bunch

I will go with IMR4064. Only one suggestion for IMR or I must say Hodgdon people,
make can short cut version of that powder, please.

Another vote here goes to VARGET for all my rifles.

Titegroup for all my pistols,

and Green Dot for the 12 ga.'s. (Think'n I should switch to Coke for this one,
as I can find it on any street corner. Can't find green dot anywhere..)

Varget = Ar2208

I choose gun powder.

You know, I've tried Varget in 223 and 308. Now, maybe it's just my particular guns but so far I have not been impressed with this powder. I know a lot of reloaders rave about it, I have managed better performance with other powders. Like I said, maybe it's just my particular guns.

Varget (AR2208) is far too slow for .223 REM, try AR2206(BLC(2) or Benchmark 2 (Benchmark), in the .308 WIN have a play with AR2206. Personally if I HAD to choose one powder for centrefires I would choose AR2206 mainly because we in Australia tend to use smaller calibres, although it is a bit dirty.

MY BENCH ONLY HAS 3 POWDERS- ww 231 for pistol, ww748 for rifles and imr7828 for the "heavy magnums"-basically anything over 30 cal and long cases- about 85% of my shooting is done with the 308 and 44 mag, then 45colt/acp and bringing up the rear the 9mm and 338 mags,

Wow. I go through lil gun, varget and 4831sc in 8lb lots. I also have a few boxes of the surplus flavour of the day sitting around. These take care of most my reloading needs, though I do keep a stash of RL-7, 4350, H110, IMR 4064 and blue dot around as well.
