If you shorten the barrel

If you shorten the barrel, or buy a M305, which is short. Is there a problem with reloading. How is the accuracy, recoil, sound volume. Is it worth buying a short just because it looks cool? Are there any reason to Springfild have mounted a recoil damper on their short models?
 
by reloading do you mean short stroking? if so no, acurracy is fine , recoil is about the same, sound volume is definitly louder. looks cool or CDI factor is not why the shorty came about on my end, i did it for bush wacking, its nice to have a semi while out hunting in the brush and a lot faster follow ups then a lever action and more punch down range than 30-30 also better choices for ammo too.

i hunt with a 18.5 inch vortexed norc, ammo is no different than for the standard barrel. mine is extremely accurate out to 400 yards ( farthest i've shot so far with it at paper) and using factory 165gr winchester supreme Nosler ballistic tips
 
Thank you for your comprehensive response. I meant to reload between shots as you mentioned. I purchased the Remington 750 carbine in 30-06 just because it was delicious, but I soon discovered that 30-06 do not work well in short barrels. I'll probably buy a short-M305 for hunting and home defense, plus the most important thing that I think it's fun to shoot. It's probably not so many thieves who have something to put up against 308
 
I find the m305 with an 18.5'' barrel also balances better. Mine is cut,vortexed and in a MFS-14 stock and recoil is very little. Most easy recoiling rifle I have shot in a 308 caliber.

You will lose the flash suppressor with the shortened version, as the barrel is wider at the muzzle for the threads and indexes for the flash suppressor and front sight unit.
 
Shorter barrel makes rifle much much handier and accuracy stays the same if not improve. Functioning is same with reloads or factory ammo alike, even with lightest loads. I made shorty with porting and it is loud to shoot, but bearable. I needed short semiautomatic big bore rifle with red dot for bear hunting and M14s fits the bill 100%. Swing it fast and shoot with both eyes open.

Well..... Sort of....
Withe shortened barrel at 18.5 the barrel diameter is too small to duplicate the standard barrel flash hider mounting detail.
However, I am machining a jig that will allow us to cut the flash hider splines into the shorty barrel with 1/2x28 castlenut.
Should have the service availlable within a couple months.
