If you were looking for a semi auto 7.62x39....

The WK181 is actually pretty decent. I think its better then the 223 version

Its ok, its chews threw main springs pretty quick... 1000 rounds and its having (more) trouble picking up the first round off a mag.
Springs are $15 for a set, come out with a field strip...but still...

Modern 7.62... bren 2 is pretty much the cream of the crop jn canada right now

Note that in another thread Dlask has asked people using their 7.62x39 NR Bren 2 conversion to not use steel case ammo. Apparently a lack of chrome lining and the steel cases being out of SAAMI spec can cause out of battery detonations. So if you want to use.steel case, another firearm may be a better choice...

Was going to renew my license and was pretty tired of having one and paying for it and not using it (can't use the banned guns). I was looking for one a week ago and ended up with the Kodiak Defence WK181C-Z despite the issues with the older gens. I'm coming from a AR15 Savage arms MSR Recon 15 that was banned and did first range day and it's definitely as fun if not more, knowing I can shoot for cheaper. I guess I was looking for something that that was AR style and then seeing I could shoot surplus ammo it was a bonus, had to buy one.

Why'd ypu wait 4 years?

The Type 81 is reliable. Unfortunately, that's where its positive qualities begin and end. Horrible accuracy, awkward ergonomics, lousy sights, very poor upgradability for optics, razor sharp internal edges, gritty trigger, etc, etc, etc. The T81 is a POS whose only redeeming qualities are it's reliability and comparatively low cost. There, I said it because nobody else seems willing. It is a low-cost, POS rifle. Beginners would honestly be better served by an SKS for even less money...

The M10X may still be an unreliable piece of crap, or M+M may have finally sorted the issues with their 3rd generation relaunch. Time will (soon) tell, as I should have my new 12" barreled M10X within the next 2 weeks. I chose to believe CSC when they stated that the issues have all been addressed, seeing as how they are the new Canadian warranty center and will have to deal with those issues if they have misrepresented the truth. Watch and shoot WRT the M10X. I will have further input based on a sample size of 1 rifle shortly.

I cannot speak to the WK-180 as I have never owned one. They may be a good low-cost choice in 7.62x39mm - I dunno.

The SKS is actually a decent beginner's rifle. The triggers tend to be gritty, but accuracy is decent, the sights are easy to use and the ergonomics are pretty good for most folks. There is good reason that the SKS is so popular in Canada, and it is not just the low entry price.

Certainly, if you have $$ to spare, then the 7.62mm Bren 2 is the "go to" for that particular chambering. The Bren 2 is a fantastic platform in almost every regard.

Personally, I would avoid the T81 as a new shooter. The sights are really poor, as is the accuracy, with the one no doubt exacerbating the other. It is NOT a good rifle for learning and then mastering the basics.

I dunno really, I guess it's a mixture of uncertainty of political/gun climate, paired with me waiting on the buyback money. Like when my AR got banned, I then bought a Glock but that didn't cut it, I enjoyed rifles more for sure. Got a Norinco T97 NSR, that was just so #### to me, like the trigger was such a downgrade compared to my AR and using it. But it was a cool piece to have. I ended up selling both of those, just in time for that handgun sales ban...

So fast forward to about 2 weeks ago as I was renewing my license, I told to myself "Why wait? You'll get the buyback money no matter what and F it if something gets banned after buying, it is what it is and at least I would have tried it/enjoyed it a bit" so I pulled the trigger ;)

And with the WK181 I'm pretty happy, I have AR like gun but with 7.62 and the trigger isn't dog#### like the T97. Not as crisp as my Savage Arms that got banned but it does the trick for some fun hobby shooting.

I don't usually go to bat for Chinese stuff, but I fail to see how an SKS that offers similar accuracy, ergos, sights, & weight to a T81 can be a better choice than the T81.
The optics compatibility/conversion and removable magazine the T81 offers is superior to an SKS.
The recoil impulse is superior on the T81, making for a smoother shooting semi.

The sights are the same; a post front and blade rear.
Quality is about the same, with a nod to early Russian rifles, but the Chinese stuff is comparable.
The T81 is every bit as reliable and as accurate as an SKS.

The only thing an SKS has going for it is that they are still relatively cheap.

I'd still take my keeper sks-d over any type 81 although the pistol grip feature and distance of trigger to magazine is a nice feature of the type 81, as is the bolt hold open feature. The sights suck plain and simple and scoping one is costly to do right.
SKS-D is so simple and robust and never fails to go bang. Mine isn't plagued by magazine insertion issues and I can insert a 5 round mag with no issue on a closed bolt. Full cap 30 round mags weren't a problem when they were legal either..... neither were drums.
Accuracy with either model of chinese rifle is hit and miss (pun intended) but my keeper sks-d shoots pretty good at 100m with czech surplus and shoots x39 hunting ammo well enough I would certainly take it hunting if I didn't have other options.
Sold most of my D rifles off over the years , 1200 seemed to be the sweet spot for the last one.
If we do actually leave the country like we were planning, it may get listed again but we are biding our time, hoping for an election sooner than later LOL I wouldn't mind one of those CZ Brens ..... cool looking rifle but a bit too rich for my blood while all these OIC prohibs are worth nothing.....

All of your arguments speak for the SKS. Not sure how you conclude your arguments when you have to pay 2 or 3 times the price.

Plus, I had a few hick ups with both of my type 81, never with any SKS. I think the reliability of the type 81 is a myth.

The stripper clips you can use for the SKS are a huge advantage too. I do not like the magazine changes on the type 81.

The only thing the SKS has going for it over a T81 is price point.

The T81 were introduced at $1000 and in my opinion that should still be the going rate. Unfortunately demand has raised the prices on them and the $300 SKS.

Stripper clips an advantage over a detachable magazine? Our retarded magazine laws aside, that horse left the barn after the second world war...

The T81 was introduced in 2016, since 2016 there has been 25.7% inflation. So assuming literally zero changes in cost from manufacturer, shipping costs, taxes, etc. it´d be $1257 and that´s for the original base model not the T81M

Each time these guns are bought assuming a unit cost of $500 and buying 1000 units TI is putting $500,000 + shipping + tax + debt interest on a product that with the single signature can go prohib. They then don´t get a return on that risk until after expending significant staff, storage, shipping and insurance costs on having the guns, and finally selling them.

I get wanting a lower price, seriously I do. But I really think when we make comments like this that quite often it´s honestly just not fair or reasonable to make such price statements
