so my dad is looking to buy a centerfire rifle to accompany his shotgun and .22, looking for recommendations on what caliber (he will pick what rifle feels the best to him).

info on my dad:
little to no centerfire rifle experience
does not reload
does not hunt, so rifle is a range/plinking rifle

i said 308 because he could hunt with it if he ever was so inclined, but .223 is also viable in my mind. what are your guy's recommendations? and please provide a reason as to why that caliber

I would suggest one of the smaller calibers for mostly plinking. If he does not usually shoot a 308 he might prefer something with less recoil.
Does he have any interest in doing target shooting? That would influence what his best choices are.

im no expert by any means but i would go with the .223rem i own two of them and cant complain at all. no experience with a 308 yet ( until my next rifle ) but i have a 30-06 for hunting and take it to the range often but would much rather shoot the .223 rem much cheaper, and easier on the shoulder, for paper punching.

A .308 is a good general purpose round and both sporting and surplus ammo is available at a reasonable price. The round can be found chambered in any style of rifle that suits his tastes. I think the .308 is a good choice for the one rifle guy.

Ok, so the .223 is King of the whatever, no agurment there. But will someone plaese sell me a M70 featherweight in .257 Roberts, I will be a happy man.

if there's a chance your dad may take up hunting , the .308 is a good choice. there's not a lot of recoil, ammo's easily available and cheap if you order from the right places and there's lots of good used guns on the market. i see the point of a .223 , .222 or even a .243 , but a .308 covers all the possibilities.
