If your Maverick 88 shoots high

At 50 yards my 88 Security shot about 12 inches high - was cleaning it the other day and felt a burr inside the barrel - removed the front brass sight - used a fine file and slowly removed the burr - when I installed the front sight I used a dab a blue locktight and made sure it didn't obstruck the inside of the barrel.

I think, this will solve it from shooting high - will update post after I take it out to the range to see if the problem persists. Note - if your not shooting slugs this may not even be an issue.

I think the shooting high with slugs is a combination of the 88's short barrel and nominal front bead. Most short barreled shotguns have a bead on a pedestal to prevent (to a degree) high shooting. Hope your remedy works. A 12" high shooting gun with slugs is not ideal.

Shotgun w bead front sight shooting high is mostly operator error. You have to make sure your face is well down on the stock so you are looking right across the top of the receiver. The bead sight has to be viewed right at the top edge of the receiver or it will shoot high. Lots of people are scaredy cats of a 12ga and so don't get the proper cheek weld and end up hitting high.

With a shorty or "tactical" 12ga you have to lean into it ... figuratively and literally ... get a good hold of it hard into your shoulder, cheek down on the stock and ride the wave baby. With full power loads she's gonna buck, but that is the beauty of a 12ga. :dancingbanana:

FWIW there is no way that sight bur was causing the entire payload to print high. Shotguns aren't like rifles. A bit of bore damage wouldn't make that much difference.

Not certain I've ever seen this, but if so it is just to compensate for operators who don't know what they are doing. Kinda like all the nanny safety aids in modern cars are there to compensate for crap drivers.

All Remington 870 Police and Tac-14s have a bead on a pedestal for exactly that reason. Otherwise they would all be shooting high.

The shorter barrel Mossbergs (18 inch and under) and especially the Shockwaves are known for shooting high!
Shorter barreled Mossbergs shooting high with slugs ... has nothing to do with operator error ... it is a design flaw.

The solution is a glue on higher front bead.

first the 88 also come with a 28inch barrel so talking about the 88 isnt necessarily about a 18.5inch barrel.
i have a 18.5inch barrel now and it shoot perfectly right, last time i shot a slug at 150ft and it was just 2inch off where i was aiming.

The op mentions the 88 security which is the 18.5" version

Unless your shotgun has rifle sights, the POI is a result of how the shotgun fits and how you hold it. Shotguns shoot high, flat and low depending on how the stock is made and how the barrel(s) are regulated. A burr inside the barrel, while concerning, isn't going to affect the POI.

OP, how long is your 88’s barrel? The shorter the barrel the greater the chance your poi will be high, depending on the front sight it could be worse.

I’ve got a 12.5” barrel with a ramped front sight with a bead and when I shoulder and aim the front bead has to almost disappear as you look down the top of the receiver, imagine setting a straight edge on the flat of the receiver. The bead has to be on or just under the line of the straight edge, with a longer barrel the sight picture changes as you have to depress things less as the muzzle farther out and visually easier to line up with the imaginary line of the straight edge. Hopefully that makes sense lol.
