took the chrony out today and checked the velocity of some igman 8x57 ammo that i have kicking around.

150 grain 2730 fps average
170 grain 2590 fps average
180 grain 2480 fps average
198 grain 2415 fps average

the 170 and 198 gr stuff is in igman boxes, headstamp some sort of 2/? symbol inside a semi-circle.

the 150 and 180 grain stuff is in bell boxes, headstamp IK.

temperature was around -3 C (typical hunting weather i think).

for comparison, remington 170 factory stuff averages 2190 fps.

That Igman 198 grain stuff in my M700 Classic Remington (24" barrel) clocks right at 2535 avg, which I thought was pretty good for the 8x57, considering the anemic loads that are offered in North America. Regards, Eagleye.

What were you shooting? Mauser? 24" barrel?

that is correct.

i checked out the igman website, looks like i am 10-35 fps behind their published velocities. close enough for me, especially since their readings are listed at "0 m" and mine are however far the cord on the chrony is long, plus the difference in temperature.

Thanks for posting your results. I have two Mausers like you and bought a bunch of the Igman 170 and 198g stuff from Districorp. But no chrony here, yet. :D

How did you guys find the accuracy with the Igman 198 gr. loading?

I was all set to buy a thousand rounds last year and then I found out that the Prvi Partizan stuff apparently has better brass for reloading. I've been looking for PP, but it seems no one up here stocks it any more so I might have to bite the bullet and buy Igman.

I reload the Igman 8mm brass and it is okay. The only problems are that the neck is fairly thick and the flash holes are a little on the small side. The first time reloading you may have to muscle them a bit more than Winchester brass. Accurate though, no different than my Winchester brass.

Thanks, Steve!

So I guess I'd just have to turn down the necks a bit and ream out the flash-holes a little, eh?

I'm glad to hear it's accurate and the brass is as good as Winchester.

Cheers!

What Kinda Groups Will the 198gr loadings shoot at 100 m or greater?

As above, I would like to find some good accurate factory ammo in 8mmx57 to use in a Mauser 98 with a scope. What kinda groups can it deliver?

If you want accurate factory 8mm, you will have to go to European manufacturers to get it. North American stuff is way underloaded (like a 30/30) to prevent people from blowing themselves up if they load it in a .318 size 8mm bore like a Gew98 from WW1 era. Sellier and Belliot make a 195-ish round that is accurate with comparable velocity to a 30/06 round. The best I got out of it with a 4x scoped K98 was 2 inch groups at 100m. Igman and Bell are both European and loaded hot but are not what I would call 'accurate'. They are good cheap plinking ammo though and you can reload the brass.

Other than that, you are going to have to reload. A great choice for 8mm as it is cheaper, more accurate and you can tailor the ammo as far as bullet weights, etc. With the same rifle as mentioned above, MOA groups are common with handloads.

Oh, also the primer pockets are a little small for CCI primers so me and the Lee AutoPrime were sweating a bit priming them!!

Ha! Ha! I think I'll buy an RCBS powerstation and let the primer pocket uniformer do all the work for me...

Cheers!:)

Ahh, nice. One of these days I will get out of the reloading dark ages and get some power tools.....

I have lots to buy....so far I just have three presses. One Forster Co-Ax and two Herter's Super Model 3's.

I need a: case primer, powder measure, case trimmer, RCBS power station, dies, powder, bullets...etc.:D

The Privi partisan I have shot in four different calibers was very hot and fast ammo.
The 8X57 I believe is comparable to the Igman.
Both load to European standards and are not concerned with
"lawyer loads"!:D

Thanks, Cat!

I'd still rather find some PP in a 196 gr. SP, but beggars can't be choosers.

Cheers!:)

Shooting High

Has anyone else noticed that the Igman loads shoot really high?

I have a k98 with iron sights... and even at the lowest setting on the ramp, it still shoots 12" high at 100m...

Does the 198 gr load do the same or is it just the lighter 170 gr loads?

Thanks

EB

See my thread in milsurps.. K-98 Shoots High. I posted this thread for this very same reason. My K-98 with iron sights and Igman 198's shoots at least 12" or more high at 100m just like you???? I was all set to blame the front post being too low.
