I know my SKS tended to chew up brass cased ammo (remember that New Generation Ammo stuff?). I found some Igman red-box "non-corrosive" "boxer-primed" 123 grain 7.62X39. Has anyone shot this in a VZ-58? Is it okay, or should I stay away from brass-cased ammo?

Igman has been producing ammo for Yugo, and many other militaries for decades. It will work fine. I don't know which primer they use, but I imagine it is a little harder than most US brass cased X39.

The soft point igman stuff will definitely jam here and there in a '58. The problem being that the soft point gets deformed (ie flattened) on the feeding ramp and causes a failure to feed. On my rifle I found that the brass was getting pretty chewed up as well but I think the main culprit for the malfunctions was the soft point.

After polishing the feeding ramp on my rifle thoroughly with some emery cloth I found the FTF's decreased significantly. If the igman stuff you have isn't soft point then you're prolly in the clear though.

That said, there's also the off chance that you could get a slam fire using non-military ammo due to the fact that the '58 uses a free floating firing pin which could in theory set off softer primers. I've never heard of this happening though.
