I have been wanting a Garand for a long time now. I think I may post a WTB ad soon. I know I want an IHC one (I grew up on a farm and my favorite tractors are red, lol) Anyways, Is there anything specific to the IH ones that I should look for? Also, what is a fair price range. I have been watching the prices and they seem to be anywhere from $1200-$2500 for Garands in general. Now I also know that some EE prices are to be taken with a grain of salt, while others are quite fair.... Is $1600-1800 in the ballpark? Thanks everyone....

Tractor Garands are quite scarce. Value depends on condition and originality. IHC parts are identifiable by the letters IHC incorporated into the drawing numbers. There are single letter markings stamped into various other parts. The stocks show a 4 digit Julian date stamped in the bottom of the stock channel.

There are various receiver stampings and there are scarce variants produced on receivers made by HRA and Springfield Armory for IHC. IHCs are fitted with LMR marked barrels which have an excellent reputation for accuracy.

Nowadays good ones seem to be slling in the $1600-$1800 range, but availability is scarce.

My brother has an international problem too. He just found an ihc fridge that he is trying to buy. He is looking for an ihc garand also.

Some question about how a farm implement company ended up building Garands and they apparently had a lot of problems, some parts even supplied by Springfield to enable them to met their numbers.

Grizz

It was about diversification of industry away from the heavily industrialized New England area in view of the Soviet nuclear threat. The IHC plant was in Indiana. The IHC folk learned that building a rifle is somewhat different than building a tractor or a plough, and there were quite a few teething problems. But at the end of the day, the rifles all passed the quality line set by govt inspectors. One of the really nice things about the IHC Garands is the LMR barrels. I've owned 3 of these, incl ones built on HRA and Springfield supplied receivers, and they are excellent shooters.

Some of the IHC receiver forgings were quite rough on the exterior, but that was only cosmetic and didn't affect functionality. Being an old farm boy who used to sniff the diesel from an IHC WD9, I like 'em.:d

I've got a 55 LMR barrel on my springfield.

When you say you want and IHC, you're really only getting an IHC stripped receiver. Virtually all parts have been changed the refurb and rebuilds

There were some IHCs that came in from the Middle East, either Jordan or Saudi I believe, about 10 yrs ago that were pretty much parts correct except for replacement stocks and mis-matched trigger housings and/or bolts. Finish was somewhat worn, but original. There were also HRAs and post-war Springfields in that lot that were in similar condition.

I got one about 30 yrs ago that was all original IHC, except for the trigger housing assembly. It even had the original stock which was in nice shape. IHC and HRA stocks are tough to find.

Virtually all Garands that stayed in US service were rebuilt one or more times with any parts that were available. There are some exceptions, but they are few.

Yes, I suppose I will start with a receiver and swap out bits as I find them...... Like all the other projects I start out thinking I'll be happy with borderline junk that will shoot....... and end up spending stupid amounts of money I will never see again....
