Long story short.. i got told today by the owner and our "officiel de tir" at the range that it is illegal to use my butlers creek mag loaded with more than 1 round at 50meters.. and i could use them with 10 rounds max at the 30meters (the only spot on the pistol side of the range that you can shoot a rifle on the table)

Its a range around the south shore of Montreal named "Club de tir l'Acadie"

at 50m with my Ruger 10/22 legally on the rifle part of the range: i can load 1 round in the mag, shoot it, remove the mag, reload 1 round MAX in the mag, shoot it.. rince and repeat
at 30m with my Ruger 10/22 legally on the pistol side of the range: i can load 10 round in the mag (out of 25), shoot it, remove the mag, reload another 10 rounds MAX, shoot it.. rince and repeat

Is it normal / real [law wise in canada] ? Never heard that one before
Is it a decision of the owner to proceed that way or are every range like that ? ( i ask because i was using fully loaded 25 rounds butlers creek at 50meter for 6 months at that club before being told that today)

I want to respect the rules and all but if its an in-house rule i may have to shop for another range!

Once again, all your input are welcome
Thank you very much.

Never heard such a nonsense,

have been using 30 round mags in my VTR on three different (pistol and rifle ranges) around here.

Specific range rule, unless there is something in La Belle Provence I'm not aware of.

Definitely not a law and I can't see it on their rules page, only caliber limits.
Is there a more exhaustive list of rules for that range? You could politely ask that official where you can read that, so you can be aware of all the other rules there could be.
I've never been to that range and wanted to check it out... Now, not so much :p

I would't say it's "illegal" to shoot a 25 round mag. As you said yourself, you can still shoot a 25 round mag but it can only be loaded with 1 round at 50 metres or 10 rounds at 30 metres.

Different ranges have different set of rules. I'm a member of 3 ranges and they all have slightly different regulations in regards to how and what you're allowed to shoot there. It's their club, their property, so they are free to set the rules as long as they are within the rule of law, I guess.

So don't despair. A good alternative would be to find some crown land, make sure nobody is around and shoot away at the backdrop :)

I have no idea what a liberal range club mean but i do beleave its an in-house rules. I just thougth before today that all quebec ranges followed the same laws.

Range rules are often totally un-related to laws, or even common sense. Like the ridiculous "range rules" you've described.

I didnt ask to read their rules but i talked to both officials and then wasnt saying the same things.. The called the club owner and ask him about the situation.. And my original post was the answer... I was blown away, specially since i was using them there for 6 months and more than once they came ask me for my modded ruger parts.. Mag loader.. 4 butlers creek 25 rounds loaded to the max on the table and it was ok.. Today it was not

...allowed to shoot there. It's their club, their property, so they are free to set ...

If it's a club then it belongs to the members. Far too many members of club executive committees act like they own the place, when they don't...

It's an issue to bring up at a club meeting, in-house rules can be voted down, whether or not the board likes it. In fact, if they refuse to bend to the will of the members, vote them out.

If it's a private range, then the owner can make up whatever rules he/she likes. In that case, it is their range. In that case, I'd take my $$$ elsewhere.

I will start shopping.. Did my redtricted 2 weeks ago and did the extra quebec money making crap law # 9 today to be able to shoot pistols.. I cant imagine the price they will ask me there

Those fu*ks are retarded. One of the most anti gun clubs you could have picked. Cancel your membership and before leaving, tel them they are a nuisance to target shooting and firearm ownership in general. They are turning an activity that should be fun into a complete nightmare.

And FYI, this is NOT law. Its nothing more than stupid range policies pulled out of their own very tight, very smelly asses.

Not necessarily it belongs to the members. I know what you're saying but not all "clubs" are non-profit and belong to the members. Some (Target Sports in Ontario, for example) is a for-profit organization and they do whatever they want to with their rules and regulations.

Also, for profit or non for profit, all clubs must cohabitate with CFO and in Ontario it is extremely hard to find consensus. Many clubs have been closed, those that are still open are overpopulated (in GTA 800 members+ so it's hard to find range time) and also are constantly harassed on the grounds of ecological surveys, noise levels and other concerns, legit or not so much.

Priciest? You gotta be kidding me! That's real cheap! Cheapest in Ontario-land is $250 annual + the another $250-500 for initiation. Prices quickly go up the closer you get to Toronto. $600-$800 is not unheard of. And there is a club that sells shares, if you can get them. These days, they go for $3000 and up and you still have to pay your annual dues!!!

From what i have seen it one for the priciest around.. Didnt knew better at the time... 200$ annual fee for rifles only.. Plus 5$ each time u go

WOW! All this BS makes me happy that our range is $85 a year and no PER VISIT charges. Heck we even get swipe cards to head in and out when we please... during certain hours!

EDIT: OH and no stupid "one round at a time in a 25 round mag" rules either! just WOW!

I belong to to club with stupid in house rules as well. Five rounds max in all mags. No matter what caliber or firearm. Brutal. But hey, nothing I can do but switch clubs in which I intend to do in the spring time.
