Im a teenager and i need some gun help

Sorry dude...... that thing you posted is an abortion in regards to hunting versatility.....it's meant to hit a target precisely at the limited range of a shotgun...... and as someone that lives in a "shotgun only" zone, like the OP, I can tell you that shotgun is a wizz poor choice....

But I do agree with you 100% as far as savings...... he can do better........ and it won't cost much more than... $600

I shoot slugs out to 100m, buckshot to 50, 7.5's at close range. How far do you guys generally take shots on deer with your shotguns ? I understand that rifled barrels and sabot slugs can increase your range but are Ontario hunters regularly shooting deer past 100m with shotguns?

So im going deer hunting this year with my dad and he said you can buy what ever kind of gun you want unless it is under 600$ and i want a 20 gauge shot gun!Im really not a fan of kick. I just dont want it to be pump action, so if anyone can help please cause i dont know what to do!Thanks for thehelp in advance ;)Btw im from se ontario so only shotgunsfor deer hunting
If you can buy anything you want OVER $600. Buy a browning citori 20 guage. Use it for birds also.

He is in a shotgun only deer hunting area. If you could find an older Rem 1100 20g with an I/C barrel that would be a pretty nice auto for slugs. And 1100's seem to do a nice job of taming recoil. It would also be a great grouse gun.

This is very good advice. The 1100 is a great gun and they usually go for a pretty reasonable price on the used market.

I also agree with the posters who have recommended having the gun fitted with a good recoil pad or wearing a recoil pad like the PAST recoil shield which can be worn under a jacket and soaks up a ton of recoil. Don't forget that you will be wearing heavier layers while hunting than you do while practicing in the summer. You may find that gun fit is changed depending on the clothes worn and that recoil is mitigated. I recommend trying out a few guns to test the fit while wearing your hunting jacket. It might make a huge difference. Poor fit will only exacerbate the effects of recoil.

Absolutely.... Especially in my area where lots of hunts are conducted over cut cornfields and soybean fields..... I have pushed sabot slugs out to almost 200 yards....

The trajectory of a 3" sabot slug is about equal to a .45-70 rifle.....

Best to see if you can try some guns local. Check tradex they had some 1100 shorter barrel guns.where are you at? If local you could shoot all mine. Good luck (I know your in Ont but maybe someone in you town will offer)

My longest shot was about 89 yards.

What a foolish thing to say to a young person who openly states they are not comfortable with recoil. ABOUT AS HELPFUL AS JUSTIN TRUDEAU!

X2.

Guy starting out asks for advice on a 20g semi auto and explains shotgun only..gets lip service about using a 30-06 for a shotgun only deer hunt and then the teen is ironically told to 'man up' by an adult from behind the safety of an anonymous computer account..

Longest shots where 220 yards. Yup you need a good gun with a rifled barrel and a #### load of practice. Closest shot, 7 ft.

Sounds like if the kid wants to shoot deer at 200 m he should invest in a rifled barrel and lots of slugs. If he's going to limit himself to 100, a scoped smooth bore should do the job. I wonder if the poor guy has information overload now. :)

Wait till he finds out you just can't buy one...wonder where he'll get the cash to purchase the next 6 or 7

To the op lotsa info for you to digest in this thread.
Only thing I will add, buy a rifled barrel gun not a smooth bore for shooting deer. Smooth bore slug shooting are for days gone by good to 75yrds with 4-6" groups.
Rifled barrels and saboted slugs can give 1.5-2" groups at a hundred yards with the right ammo . Treat that shotgun like rifle when you fire it! Trigger control and scope help immensely. keep scopes low powered 1.5x4 or fixed 2.5x something with a wide field of view. That will allow possible shot opportunitys to 200yrds with enough accuracy to feel confident shooting at Bambi that far away!

Guys will tell you smooth bore and rifled slug will work fine....and they will but they will limit your effective range and they kick like a mule!

You're gonna get an overloading amount of advice here my friend but you're making a smart choice with the 20. Your gonna have more fun with it aside from deer hunting.
That being said don't be surprised if you don't love the first thing you buy, fit and comfort in a gun is totally personal and it only done through trial and error, everyone on here blasting out different ideas of what you should get is what works for them. That's not to say it will or will not work for you.
Start out of low and work your way up trying new guns selling and trading or upgrading along the way until you find something that has that fit with all the options you are looking for.
Happy hunting
