i'm actually going to build an AR LOL help please

There are two things I'd never run in an AR:

1) A piston (well, maybe the H&K...)
2) 7.62 x 39

Gotta agree with this.

FWIW I have a DI upper that I use for testing "muzzle devices." That upper gets abused in a big way and essentially never cleaned. It gets massively overheated and full of crud and blowback. I have never field stripped it and it has had hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of rounds through it in very challenging conditions and really hasn't skipped a beat.

I just don't see the point of a piston upper in light of my experience with DI guns.

after a lengthy discussion last night with satain , perhaps i need to go back to drawing board LOL My inexperience with this platform is shining thru i'm sure...... but that's okay hehehe

I'll be reading and learning about the pros and cons of piston and the use of x39 in general.
I had not taken into account the magazine issues and this is a big glitch in the idea.
Satain suggested for my requirements, doing up project 1 in a 9mm version and he's just about got me convinced to go ahead LOL

thanx for your thoughts guys. it's nice being the guy asking questions for a change :D

There are TONS of options for a complete and real build if you go 9mm. Personally, I'd recommend you either use an RRA pistol lower or use a Hahn Precision mag well block. these are by far the best options that are readily available.

Questar will have most of what you need and Brownells has the rest. I LOVE my 9mm. Amazingly accurate, reliable and fun to shoot - especially with LAR15 mags.

I already have a matching set of custom , stripped lowers :)
All i have to do now is go shopping to dress them up :D

If you go 9mm, you will need a 9mm insert block. Not all insert blocks are created equal.

If you want ultimate reliability - I recommend Hahn Precision part No. A9CPRB0402

Accept no substitute. Works 100% with all mags, even the early black follower LAR mags.

God, if you want a 7.62X39 AR build one. Don't worry about what everyone else thinks

I used a DPMS barrel and DPMS bolt...you know the bolt that everone says you will shear the lugs off . Granted I did break my bolt after about 2000rds...but not at the lugs. I managed to get a case stuck ( damn steel cases ) and decided to pound on the charging handle. It ripped the extractor in half !

Anyhoo....I bought the end all LMT 7.62X39 bolt . Been running that for about 900rds and now have my DPMS with new extractor as backup

I have dedicated 7.62X39 mags but have been running 6.5Grendel 5rds now. BTW, 5 rds will feed suprisingly reliable in 5.56 mag but you will have some exmplaining to do to the RCMP why your 5.56 mag takes more than 5 . The Questars 10rd mags are good for about 6 rds. I changed out the follower on one of my Questar mags to Grendel follower ...haven't had a chance to really test

I haven't been taking any special precautions other than a regular AR type cleaning with corrosive ammo. So far so good. Even if the bore gets pitted out I will just buy a new barrel . Not worried about gas tube...they are $15!

Phase 2 of my 7.62X39 project was a Adam Arms piston kit. They will tell you that they do not state their kit will work with 7.62X39 .What I found is works fine if you open gas port up a bit. Have only about 500rds through this so far but seems to be working well

Lastly, for all the people who think you can't open up a std ar bolt face...well it all depends on the bolt you start off with. Lots the Grendel guys ( who were running 7.62X39 bolts made from opened up 5.56 bolts ) had problems. Very few using the AA Grendel bolts had issues. CCS have now caught on and are now making their 6.5CSS bolts from the SAE9310 steel

Not sure what LMT makes their enhanced 7.62x39 bolt from ( the guy I spoke to just said "better steel" ) . The AR Performance Superbolt for 7.62X39 is also made from SAE 9310 but will NOT work with the Adam Arms piston system

If you non corrosive is Wolf, you will need to tweak the firing pin to ensure a stronger primer strike. PM me for details if that is your case

The AA piston assembly fits perfectly in the DD 9.5 FSP forend

Only issue I currently have with this setup is the EO Thingy keeps blinking out when shooting. Never did it when it was on a 5.56...didn't the stouter recoil would cause this. Aimpoint will be going on there soon

There are only two things you need to know:

1)Only HK makes a piston system that is combat proven and in large scale issue - and works.

2)7.62X39 is not an AR catridge. The bolt does not have enough meat to support the base of a 7.62 catridge. The agressive tapering of the catridge needs a curved magazine that is not compatible with the straight mag well of AR.

I do not know why I am saying this, but you may as well get a XCR if you really want a 7.62. Personally, I will not count on a system that does not use a magazine system that has the same curvature design as the AK/VZ system.

I personally think you should just go with 5.56/.223. The AR system was designed on that cartridge and there are far more parts on the market for standard ARs. If your worry is affordability, there are many different brands of .223 that you can get at an affordable price. Plus almost all manufactured .223 cartridges are made corrosive free. Finding non-corrosive 7.62x39 will cost as much or more than many .223 available. You can find brand name .223 for 35 cents a round, or even cheaper if you can find someone local (on CGN) who can reload ammo to make you some .223.

There are many many options. Although, if you want an AR chambered to 7.62-short just to be different or to standardize/optimize your ammunition acquisition and use than definitely go for it. We can only give you opinions and in the end it's really only up to your interests (and available funds :) )
