I'm back!!!!

Satellite.:D

Can remember the days way back when we just sat around under propane lights with a bottle of whisky, a deck of cards and a crib board.

Actually I think those days were better. It was man time and we talked instead of making sure we didn't miss "Two and a Half Men".:p

We've got it pretty rough too. We have gone from the propane light and crib board to wind powered electricity and hot showers. We DON'T allow a T.V. LOL.

Pretty sure the Garside fam hunts them islands to, you been hunting them long?

First time. My friends and I are in college, and hunting St. Joes is something we've been planning to do for 2 years. It worked out quite well considering we couldnt get too much preseason scouting in. But, now since we've been in most of the blocks and found some decent scrapes within the past few days, it leaves another month of bow season.

Ya, were gonna head back out for some bow hunting yet to. Still have a buck and a doe tag yet.

If you guys have a boat and access to the islands did you know theres about 400 acres of crown land thats only accessible by boat right off the tip of that island? The whole tip of Milford Haven is crown but it's land locked, so's a big chunk of the south end of Bigpoint, grew up in that bay.

Ya we worked that tip a bit during bow season, and it was going to be an option opening day but there was a boat parked at the dock by the cabin that was there so we figured we'd give him his space. Probably wont be hunting the island next year though, but if I am around, im definitly getting permision from different land owners. Just too many people trotting though the same patches of land.

Thats the way to go about it, crown land is swarmed with guys that just wanna do the deer thing. We used to have a couple chunks of crown out here we'd hunt religiously every year and then about ten years back it got worse and worse. We've got my 100 acres now and another guy thats been hunting with me for 20 years bought up another 100 acres last year and we have a farm with permission to hunt it as well as an apple orchard over by the landing so we really don't need the crown any more. Shouldn't be hard getting permission right now for hunting now that rifle season is over. The farmers really do want them deer outta their fields and their regulars are all gone now.

I just got back from St joe myself...we got one small doe on sunday and I got a nice spike @ 4:30 tonight with my new 444 marlin:D:cheers:....we had 2 doe tags and one buck tag so 2 out of 3 isn't too bad....passed on a couple of does with twins and we didn't see as many deer this year as we usually do, too warm I quess....

Ya, it was warm, started getting a little uneasy about the ones hanging from opening day so we took them over to my moms garage yesterday and butchered them right away before most of the guys headed back to town. Easier that way, you can still have a weekend rather than all get together again and do all the butchering on the weekend.

Ya I was going to let my deer hang but opening day it was about 10C over night in the soo, so I wasnt chancing it. Quartered and in my fridge for a couple days. Not the same, but it'll do. Now just fireing up the brand new bradley smoker and will be doing some trial runs tomorrow in between duck hunting. College life is the greatest.

Well my highway work is all caught up and I took off for a week of deer season so now it's infraction time for all you guys that have been acting up while I was away.;)
:runaway:

Who told you? I thought I covered my tracks:eek:

Nice deer even if you do hang em funny:D

Great hunt MD - ours was pretty slow. I had the only antlerless tag for the group and let a fawn walk on opening morning. Unfortunately, it walked in front of my buddy and that was the end of the doe tag.

Saw one the next day - thought it was a buck, but couldnt tell for sure so no shot. The guys across the road killed a buck that afternoon and said it had a messed up set of antlers. I am pretty sure it was the same one I saw - glad I didnt kill it as I already shot a one antlered moose :p

Rest of the week we only saw does and fawns.

Great weather for hunting - one of the nicest I can remember

Rest of the week we only saw does and fawns.

Ya, saw about a dozen does and fawns out in Alfies fields and the fields by my moms on Thursday afternoon when we butchered our deer.

Drove by your Dodge Tuesday afternoon but you must have already been in the bush so I didn't stop, it was parked at the corner.

Nice pole MD!

We hunted property next to D. Bookers hard for six days outta seven. 5 guys and 5 antlerless tags. Doesn't get much better right? Well, we got two fem fawns....thas it. Saw 7 deer total. Three were shootable and 4 wern't. Oh well...saved my tag for bow and the weather looks nice for the next week so theres still a chance.

Congrats again

By the sounds of things at the corner was that there were alot of large bucks weighed in but not half as many deer. The numbers are sure dropping. I think it's all cause they changed opening day to Saturday instead of the old Monday opener.

Mainly because people were whining that they wanted to bring their kids out.

Know what? I've been hunting since I could get my license and I ditched school every year for a week when season opened....why can't people do that anymore without having to get the rules changed to accomodate them? Starting to be a liberal run island.....haha. St Joe Hunters and Anglers don't have a clue what they're doing. Wanna do something smart.......stop the weekend opener and bring in a December 3 day muzzleloader season like Manitoulin. Honestly, if you can't book the time for hunting and can only hunt the weekend of a 7 day season it's time to shut er down and quit hunting the island.

just got back from bobcageon ,were we get our deer butchered..
the butcher there was saying ..
usally by this time of year normally they would have butchered 80-100 deer

as of today he just did only 20:eek:

I personally find it hard to believe that deer numbers are dropping.

I can remember five years back when we would sit in our stands and throw cigarette butts at the does and fawns to get them off our bait piles. Now we can't even fill a doe tag. Something is sure wrong with the numbers, be it coyotes and wolves or maybe the turkeys eating up the deer winter feed, not sure what it is but the numbers are definitely down.

Hi Joe, good to hear your camp had a good hunt. One of these years I am coming up there to take you up on the invite! :D

Reports I have heard personally from Eastern Ontario hunters and butchers suggest that it was a good year but not a great one, for hunter success. I was in a camp first week in a shotguns only WMU and we took two nice does. (Eight hunters, three doe tags) This week in a different camp in a rifle-hunting zone, two more nice does (Eight hunters, four doe tags).

I have also hunted other properties solo and in fact am playing hookey today, which is the last day of rifle season. Nobody to hunt with and I did not feel like going solo again like I did yesterday. Anyways, two weeks of gun hunting for me and I did not raise a gun..........BUT I have parts of four deers in the freezer, plus venison from my bow hunting so I reckon I won't starve!

Doug

PS) We never allowed TV in any hunt camp either........... other than the one time I hunted with a gang that stayed in an old farm house near Belleville and they watched #### flicks for hours at a time. (I told them they should get a life..........)
