For years it's been, deer & Blackies grab my 30-06, moose & elk the .338.
I thinking big bore, not to improve on the 06 and .338, but for satisfaction and fun.:)
Thought of a .375 H&H. Then there is the Marlin boomers, not sure but I think I should go with 45-70 or .450 marlin.
If you were looking to play and check out something different what would you go for.:confused:
 
Pretty safe bet to say "45-70", in either a Guide Gun or an 1895 Marlin. Handy, with plenty of power if you want it. (A bit of a "Jekyll and Hyde" kind of round.) Lots of history, which adds to the satisfaction.
 
I just about sold both to make a custom .338-06 then it was a .35 whelen then a .358 nm. What would you think a practical range would be for a balls to the wall 45-70 load on moose. As it turns out I may sell everything and try new guns in new chamberings just to mix it up:cool:

my rifle with peeps I wouldn't pass up a moose inside 200m. with a scope and a Ruger #1, Sharps, or simmilar, I'm sure you could cleanly kill much farther. I shot one with mine ( 350gr FN @ 2150fps MV) @ 150yrds last year. took it down, fast :D

if yiou mean the .458win cartridge, then the marlins will not accept a shell that long. but the BLR will, maybe a browning?

if you mean .458 (as I did) as a caliber, then yes they are strong enough, and have been around for many many moons.
 
I got a 500 S&W in a NEF HandiRifle on order. Out of a 22" tube, the 500 S&W is right up there with the big boys. Factory 440gr loads designed for 10" barrels are pushing 5000ft.lbs out of the longer tube. Should be OK to 200 yards, maybe a little less. And it's only 6.5 lbs.

In terms of diameter, it's hard to beat a .50 :D

are you trying to say that a 22" NEF chambered in 500 S&W will shoot a 440 gr. bullet @ 2250 fps, 600 fps faster than 10" pistol? :rolleyes:

I use mostly cast bullets for the big bores (most fun). I used Cast Performance Bullets 440 gr. Wide Flat Nose Gas Check sized to .500.

Accurate Arms 1680, 40.9 gr, 1898 fps.

Accurate Arms 4100, 33.3 gr, 2029 fps.

Accurate Arms XMP-5744, 36.2 gr, 1897 fps.

Hodgdon H-110, 36.0 gr, 2040 fps.

Hodgdon H-4227, 35.5 gr. 2011 fps.

Hodgdon Lil’Gun, 32.5 gr, 2027 fps.

Hodgdon Longshot, 19.6 gr, 1805 fps.

Hodgdon Titegroup, 15.5 gr, 1693 fps.

That's using published loads, intended for the 10." Other threads on the forums there indicate that slightly slower powders are even better. And you can get a lot more room in the cartridge by seating the bullet farther out, as OAL limitations are not as applicable in a break action like they are in a revolver.

man are you in luck. you need a 300WSM to keep it interesting. and i have one for sale!!!
 
I'm Bored

I think the next one will be a M700,in 358STA,or an old pre 64 Model 70 action,from my basement in the same calibre.It's chambered 300 H&H,so it should work out OK!:D Cheers,Mur
 
Here's a suggestion. If you are bored, want a big bore and want something different, how about a modern flintlock rifle? It will keep you busy learning new techniques, might make you a better hunter and has the advantage of not needing registration. Just a thought.
