Im Confused CZ, VZ, 58, 858...

Hello all,

I have been reading in the red rifle section for a while just for the main reason of the SKS. While in here I noticed a new rifle the CZ 858. I think that's what it is called.

My questions are What is the difference in the CZ to the VZ and the 58 to the 858. If my research is right the 858 is non-restricted and the 58 is restricted. Also what are the price ranges for the two or more different ones.

Forget the VZ CZ stuff for a minute, all that matters is the numbers.

858 - longer non restricted barrel, not chrome lined.
58L - longer non restricted barrel, chrome lined.
58 - Short restricted barrel, chrome lined.
 
CZ means Czeska Zbrojovka and is the company that produced the rife. Vz is the abbreviation for the Czech word "Vzor" which means model. 1958 is the year of design/production. VZ-58 is the "most correct" term but CZ-58 works as well and anyone will understand you whichever one you use.

To add to this Cz/Vz858-2 Vz58 are also different in barrel lengths.
Vz858-2 is 20" Vz58 is ~16.5".
 
from wolverine are:

CZ858 or CZ858-2 non restricted (non chrome) and CZ858-4 restricted (chrome) .

from marstar are :

VZ58L non restricted and VZ58S restricted (both chrome) .

just to confuse you some more , there will be two more model from marstar soon . one is a krinkov and the other is a new style furniture , dont know if they will have a seperate model number .

We have one (CZ/VZ 858). Super light, accurate, not much recoil... ianwd's cousin, a priest, went shooting to the range with us a couple years ago and he found it "very relaxing" to spend the day shooting (hadn't done it since he was a kid) and we have him on film quoted as saying "I've gotta get me one of these" after letting quite a few rounds go.

havent seen a wolverine short barrel yet so i cant really say but i will assume its like long barrel , in that case there wasnt much dif , just minor internals .

Just got 3 of them, according to Wolverine they have a 15.5" bbl. 2 came with the full circle front sight hood, one with the 3/4 hood.

In any case they look great, haven't taken them to the range yet though.

Thanks very much for the clarification everyone, it now makes sense to me. Does the 858 look a little odd due to the longer barrel or does it fit well?

Marstar's rifle is actually designated CZH 2003 and is exported by CZ Hermex (not the same company as Česká Zbrojovka).

There are differences in the way each is made. A search of threads here will provide more info.
