I'm confused...for once I'm satisfied with the hunting cartridges I own!?!?!

Started downsizing this summer was a little surprised to find out I did not have any emotional attachments (except for my Dad's 30 06 that my Son now has), left with Parker Hale 375HH, Ruger 338WM, 98 308, 98 6.5x55, 45/70 lever, Cooey 30 06 and a A bolt 270wsm, the last two I would like to sell and replace with something like a 270 in CRF before next hunting season. Not exactly spartan, but I have stopped looking, rifle with a spare for anything I hunt, plus one for my Wife and a 45/70 camp gun(obvious Fudd). Hung up on CRF, Not interested in getting over it. I am sure this would not suit most but that's the beauty of this activity something for everyone.

Hoyt...........I would never imply you were an idiot, your extrapolation is skewed...........it's a disease, you can't help it, like alcoholism.............

SC......and that is still two too many................

Actually, I was prepared to own it... It is "idiotic" to spend $900+ each on a .260 & .338F Handi Stub... But with having all other members of the .308 family, those two glaring holes, drove me crazy... My OCD demanded that be addressed... Now the symmetry of the set makes me smile... The 9.3X74R stub made perfect sense at the time... However, in retrospect... Nah... It still makes sense, if only to me.

Sounds like you need to play around with more of your wants instead of your needs. I can handle anything I want to hunt or shoot with 4 calibers - 22 rim fire, 223, 308 and 12 gage, but somehow or another I tend to run a float of about 20 guns. They come and go every now and then as my interests wander. Lately I've been playing around with milsurps, because they just seem to have a lot of character ~ or maybe I'm just getting sentimental at my age.

The 375 will do anything a 300 will... AND - it will serve you well on just about any continent, as it is the 'minimum' for dangerous game in most countries.. I suppose misery likes company; so you should fill your desire with the one caliber left on my (our) list of "must have but don't need" . Montana Rifle Company makes a great Dangerous Game Rifle in 375 at a reasonable price too.... Good luck. I share your affliction LOL

Although I'm somewhat new to the firearm world, I went through this with guitars.

At some point you have to stop collecting and start playing. If not, all you are is a collector, not a musician.

I am trying NOT to limit everything to .308 !! .. But it ain't easy

My problem with .308 is:

  • factory ammo is dirt cheap
  • factory 'managed recoil' ammo for the wife and kids is dirt cheap
  • ex-military ammo is available for cheaper than dirt cheap
  • and if dirt cheap is too expensive, hand loading is too easy
  • packs a big whallop (big enough for any N. American game)
  • flat enough trajectory (even for those pro sharpshooting competitions)
  • low recoil (enhancing accuracy)
  • etc.

:(

You have a decent choice of calibers to enable you have a lifetime of fun with.
With proper loads, you can hunt and target shoot without over crowding your loading bench, and
put meat in the freezer.

Sometimes I get the feeling that I have too many bangers for my own good, but hey, I'm a certified
gun nut, gun tinkerer & reloader.:)

For f**ks sake, get a .458 Win. mag. to cure the big bore itch. Super versatile cartridge for the reloader
and can be very accurate with a well built rifle.;)

Pretty happy with what I have at the moment, have two that could be rebarrelled.
have a .22LR bolt, 20ga O/U & SXS, 12ga singleshot, and a pump and an autoloader.
Then a .218Bee singleshot, a .223 singleshot.
A 7-08 bolt,a 7MMRemmag lightweight singleshot, 300Rook singleshot, a 30R SXS, a 300H&H singleshot.
A 338WM bolt, and a 450-400NE singleshot. Also have a 32-40 singleshot for plinking targets.
Been debating rebarreling a Ruger #1 action, but, what to?? The 450-400 shoots a big range of bullet weights, 210 to 400gr, the 7-08 or 7RM does the same, and adds range, the .22LR, the Bee or .223 covers varmints and gophers. The 30R & 300H&H & .338 are all versatile rounds.
The Rook needs a barrel, but again, what to? It's an old gun, can't take high pressure rounds, possibly a 25-20 would be nice there.
The Ruger could become something in a 25 or 26 cal, a 257Roberts, or maybe build it into a target use gun again, in a 6.5 of some form.
