I,ll be getting my income tax return very soon and will definatly be getting a new hand gun .
and heers the confusion .
im considering the XD.40 ,5 inch tactical and the glock22 or glock 20 .
the things that attract me to the XD are the price is cheaper than glock,i like the 40 cal because i think its got suficiant power for the shooting i want to do and ammo is available i also should mention i do want to reload and im assuming the XD has a fully supported chamber .this is a advantage over glocks ,for reloading purposes .
I also think the XD is more accurate with the standard 5 inch barrel .
the only concern i have whith the XD is durability .
I hear the locking blocks crack and break with not that much use at all and i want to shoot alot ,like 500-1000 rounds a month in the summer anyways.
im not conserned with rust or the finish ,just durability ,and the fact that springfeild might still have bugs to work out as its not been out that long yet
now with the glocks ,i have a glock 17 -9MM i can shoot the thing just about forever and i think its 100% reliable and almost indestructable ,i belive they have worked out all the bugs and thus resulted in (perfection)but they dont have the fully supported chamber in there stock barrel .
I do reload for my glock 17 and i dont get any case bulgeing at all but i dont think the 40 cartride in the glock 22 will be so lucky regarding reloads.
now i can buy a aftermarket barrel from kkm precision or jarvis or barsto and have no conserns at all with the glock at all regarding relyability durability or accuracy.
but if i have to do this ill get the glock 20 in 10 MM and get the kkm 6 inch .40 conversion .
So it boils down to this . i rilly like the XD 40 and if it has a fully supported chamber and i can count on the thing not falling to peices id like to save alot of $ as im sure all my other interests will be met(accuracy and such.
if not ill stay with the glock at what ever the cost

Welcome to life as a gun whore...lol...I know I was driving my self nuts trying to figure what to buy with my Ralphy bucks till I decided on a Browning HP (an old, always wanted one, jones that I had to satisfy).

Was looking at Glocks and XD's as well. Basically, both are durable and there are fans and opponents of both.

Biggest favor you can do yourself is go down to, preferably, a range, or secondly, a gun shop that stocks both, and find what works and feels the best for you. That will give you more to go on than a truckload of opinions on both sides of the fence here.

The XD is a supported chamber and Glock is not. XD's you can shoot straight lead from them from the word go, while with Glock, especially at the volumes you say you will be shooting, should stick with jacketed bullets unless you get a replacement barrel as mentioned. Likewise, if you get an XD40 you can get a replacement Barsto or EFK Firedragon 9mm and have the best of both worlds. You can do the same thing with Glock as well, BTW. Look on Barsto and EFK's sites for the info. One neat thing with XD's, though I don't know if I would trust them for IPSC but good for range puttering, is that they can use slightly modified Beretta mags in addition to regular XD mags, or so I have read on some US sites. Also, the dovetail on XD's is the same as Sig so that helps with sighting options. As XD's are new, parts may be an issue whereas there are lots of Glock stuff floating around. Still, that should even out over time.

Anyways, my $0.02 after spending the last two months driving myself crazy too...

Hmmm....maybe I'll get an XD with my tax return....or should it be Glock...d'oh!

Which gun fits you better? As you already own a Glock you won't have to get used to it. However the large frame G's are a quite a bit larger. The XD might point well and is smaller in overall frame size. Tough call.

the hype about Glock unsupported chambers is just that, hype. When I reload .40 all my brass is once fired from Glocks, and there are zero issues. Yes the XD has a more supported chamber, but unless you are planning on loading to the absolute max in each case, and doing it 10 times, you have nothing to concern yourself with. So don't allow the hype to make up your mind, pick the gun that fits you best. If it's the Glock, get that, if it's the XD get that. Parts for XD's are shipping to dealers now I believe, and the block in XD's is a removable part (I think that's right) so if it goes, you can swap a new one in.

Slavex, I would disagree with you on that one.

It is probably nothing to worry about when shooting factory ammo, or when using new brass with moderate loads. But if you are using brass that has gone through a couple of loads and you are loading to factory spec then it is something to consider.

I have had one experience with a blowout in the unsupported area in a Glock 22. Brass had been loaded twice a/three times and it was major PF ammunition. I fired and instantly my hands were in pain. The projectile left the barrel and the case stovepiped. To my relief I had nothing but burnt powder/gas marks on my hands, but the case had blown out on the exact spot where the barrel is unsupported.

So yes I agree that it is hype to some extent, but if you are loading brass a couple of times and loading more than moderate strength loads then it is a consideration. The blowout that I described has happened to me twice - 9mm and 40. No damage to the gun (and no, they were not my guns or loads) but it is certainly something to think about when reloading for Glocks.

that's why I had the "Unless" part in my post, it covers all the things you mentioned HKFan. for me, I have a constant source for brass, so I never load my brass more than once (in other words I don't pick up my brass to bring home).

Yep the unless part is important.

Since I am up and cannot sleep, I just took a pic of the 9mm case that I kept after the blowout. I have changed the contrast etc and that is why it looks wierd, but you can clearly see that it has blown out where the case was not fully supported:

By the way, does anyone know how hard it is to take a photo of a case!
