Hey guys,

As stupid as I am ('Cause I sure feel like one), I forget to clean up my pistol (a S&W M&P 9mm) and I found it all rusted today. It's not 100% rusty obviously, but I would say a fair 10 % of the slide is (I haven't checked the barrel yet, as I'm too afraid to be heartbroken).

Is there a doctor in this room that can save the soul of this pour gun :( ?

Oh and btw, I stored it in a dry and cool basement. I don't think we can say the environment is really a cause to all this shame :(

Oil, oil and more oil. I always rub oil on all metal parts after a range trip, wipe off and all my pistols look like new. Put some oil on it and rub it in for a couple minutes with your fingers. I'm thinking this will help, not necessarily the heart transplant you may have been looking for but a step in the right direction.

Have you rubbed it down with oil and a rag, or even very fine steel wool? I doubt that it will be pitted. More likely just an orange frosting that looks worse than it actually is.

I will rub it gently with oil and all tomorrow to see how it goes. As it is, my carbines are probably also rustied (I understand this might be less alarming than I thought) but still, I got a cleaning job on my hands in a few days.

I guess I'll enjoy the joys on solitary rubing.

That sucks. Everybody has gave you good tips. That's surprising how rusty thet got. Did you take it outside before or something? Maybe condesation formed?

A few days ? that may explain why you have rust. And if your carbines are rusted to you may want to looking into how to maintain and clean a gun.

I thought the M&P was stainless? I understand stainless will rust but it take a lot of skill to make it do so. Did you take a shower with it or something? I have a stainless steel pole that hands a bug zapper in my backyard that has been sitting out there for a few years and it has 0 rust. My 870 supermag (parkarized) loved to develop a light coating of orange surface rust. I put some engine oil on a piece of fine steel wool to remove it. After switching to G96 it never happened again. G96 is IMO the best product to prevent rust. It also stands up great in wet conditions.

Well I actually don't shower with a pistol in my hand, but thanks for asking. I didn't abuse it in any ways or form, I simply didn't clean it last time. I guess it's not a religion to do so, but I might consider a basic cleaning schedule to prevent losing value on those.

I have a very 'dry' basement and USED to store my toys down there. UNTIL the season changed from winter to spring....opened the cabinet and my pristine winchester had a thin layer of whitish mould on all the wood and signs of sweat droplets on the metal. AMBIENT HUMIDITY!!! A killer for guns! Keep'em comfy guys.

Break free CLP is great for stopping rust. You'll likely still see light pitting where the rust started, but if you stay on top of it from now on, it shouldn't get worse. Even if you're not getting out to shoot (you might be one of us weirdos with a job and other obligations) try to check all your guns regularly and oil them pre-emptively.

And don't feel too bad about a little rust, it just gives it character.;)

Although I recommend it, you dont need to fully strip and clean your guns after each range trip

Just wipe em down to get rid of any liquids, fingerprints etc. The oil em down, and wipe it again if you don't want to store yet. Easy few minutes for each firearm. Grab oil in a spray can to make it even easier. Try G96 or Remoil

Apply a coat of G96 - you will never see rust again. After that, a maintenance wipe here and there, say once every 6 months or after a range trip should be all that's required to keep it looking brand new.

Though I can't really add to how to correct your situation, I can add to preventable measures.

I have a "Golden Rod" safe dehumidifier in my safe; along with a jar of "Damp Rid". I've never had a moisture problem.

I've even placed a cold/damp gun into the safe (after coming in from hunting) and ran out the door to take the kids to hockey, and forgetting to clean it when I got home. The next morning, the gun is dry and no rust has ever been found.

If the basement is "cool" its not dry, never store your firearms underground.
