I'm dumb, my pistol is all rusty :(

Personally I found kroil and 000 steel wool to work well, on my 22 rifle I have sitting out in the open on my rack I found some rust spots so I applied the kroil (penetrating oil) let it sit for a few minutes then scrubbed it with the steel wool and it looks like new plus it didn't even ruin the bluing. After that i just treated it with the recommended 3 coats of g96 and no rust yet.

I keep a rag soaked in chainsaw oil in the safe in a ziploc bag.... every time I put one back in I wipe it down.... always amazes me how guys will spend hundreds or thousands on guns and nothing for a safe dehumidifier.... hell, even a few packs of the dessicant from shoeboxes and other stuff thrown in the safe helps stave off humidity

I have the large metal cans of dessicant and I run a dehumidifier in the summer, spray with G96 and wipe down with a silicon cloth.

I use dessicant in all my gunsafes, and reactivate it in the oven every 3 months or so.
Also wipe all exposed surfaces with G96 after use.
No rust so far on anything.
Eagleye.

Never say never, the day is coming when we all will have to "store" our firearms underground.

I hear you on this!

:mad::(;)

BTW, To the original poster, I always clean bore after every use as it cleans like nothing when fresh. I use Hoppes until patch comes out clean and follow with clean swab and G96. Then I wipe powder residue off outside with a paper towel and WD40. Then wipe the entire gun with a clean cloth covered with G96. I store all firearms on ground floor of house, and would never store in the basement. Occassionaly I also spray G96 down the bores of guns that are sitting and not used for long periods just so they are well soaked to keep moisture from gathering. i do not worry about oil on my guns or running a little bit when in storage. Just remember to run a clean dry patch down the bore before firing so all oil is removed. I have never had a problem with any of my guns. I came close to having a pitted bore once when I did not clean a pistol immediately upon returning home as I had to leave home for another engagement and put it in the safe rather than lying on the table in order to cover my *ss under these stupid gun laws and then got sidetracked with other issues and went to bed that night when I returned and forgot for a couple weeks about the dirty gun. My normal procedure is to put dirty guns on table upon returning home and then clean immediately or after supper - I also find this rather relaxing and gives me a chance to fondle some firearms.

Ya like cyclone says, there's surface rust and then deeper rust.

Yours sounds like surface rust, not to worry.

0000 steel wool and CLP or gun oil of your choice, with a light touch of course.

Wipe down with a clean cloth or paper towel then oil and store.

Remember oil BEFORE you store. ;)

Subsurface rust?
All rust is surface rust. As it eats its way in, you get pitting, as steel is destroyed.

In theory yes

The term surface rust refers to light rusting that you can simply wipe away. Otherwise you need to scrub, and at that point it may have pitted

Whya re you waiting a few days to clean them. Get a rag. Put some oil on it. Wipe them down. It takes literally 10 seconds to do that.

It was probably the sweat off your hands that caused them to rust.

I keep all my guns in my basement as that is the only place I can store them. I have a de humidifier that I set right beside the safe. I have it set on auto for 45% Humidity. Golden rods and other type of heat sticks work great too.

i clean mine depending on how many rounds I have fired out of it and what kind of weather it was in. excessive cleaning with chemicals and brushes can start to wear out your barrel and other things.
